I was in Vons shopping today and noticed the $1 progressive was at
$8150. That seemed pretty high to me. Checking the DDBP paytable it
was 7/5.
At home I ran this game through my software ($8150 RF and 7/5) and
the return was 98.08% and the variance 107.6!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank goodness for Frugal VP and BDPWP. A game that appeared to be
quite good was actually terrible.

I use the following rule of thumb when checking progressives for
positive play: Take the full pay version ev subtract 1% for each full
house and flush shortage add 1% for each $2,000 increase in
progressive (since royal approx 2% of ev) hence in your Vons case:
99(9-6 ddb) -2( 9 v 7 fullhouse) -1(9 v 6 flush) +2 (+$4,000
progressive) = 98...no computer needed!

I do this as well. If you know the base ER for the JB based game it's
relatively easy to get a decent guestimate for progressives or modified
paytables. For me the trickier part is adjusting strategy.
