I would be interested in your comments on how long you're willing to
chase a Royal, on a quarter 8/5job with a meter setting of $2900+.
i.e. how much money will you invest before you quit with the
assumption that "it's just not your day"?
I've found, through some combo of luck and abberation, that when I
try to capture a Royal by sitting there until my fingere are numb, it
never comes. Conversely, I've gotten 90% of my royals, within io or
15 minutes of starting on the machine. The exception was when I
decided, early one morning, with no one else on the bank, to go after
a NSUD with a prog. meter of $2800+. After playing for 90 (and losing
$50 of my initial $100 investment, I hit the deuces for $300+. I was
going to quit then but decided to play a few more hands and, drawing
to the 10/J,bought the other 3 pieces! Noone was more surprized than
I was.
Anyway, I'm interested in what your willing to expend in your quest
to nail a RF.
Thanks
Probability of landing a Royal
For me, there is no hard or fast rule.
I will leave when hungry, if cigar smoke bothers me, if the bank is
empty or nearly so, etc.
I will stay when winning, when in competition with other pros
I will leave a 25c play quicker than $1 with similar % advantages.
I, too, seem to hit early or not at all. However, there have been
many exceptions to that rule.

If it's the best yielding game available, I will happily sit there
and play the same game even past the point where my coin-in exceeds
the value of the royal, assuming I'm confident that it's a fair game.
Likewise, I will leave a game if I'm hungry, if I have to be
somewhere, if I'm bored with the game and want to try something else,
or if environmental factors make it unpleasant. I will be a little
less likely to leave a high-return game than a low-return one, but
high return games come along at least every week or two so it's not a
big deal.
I keep my records in terms of expected return (with a small deduction
for playing errors) versus average return, with any shortfall to
expected going to a receivable and any excess reducing that same
receivable. I'm confident that the receivable will net to zero over
time. Thus, hitting the royal has little effect on my measured
success for the day, it's just an internal funds transfer between
accounts. Relative success depends on finding high returns to play.

That's a 101.8% return with perfect strategy, and about 101.3% without altered strategy (using normal JoB-8/5 strategy). I'm assuming I'd be able to add at least another half-percent for the usual cash-back and bounce-back. Then there are the comps to consider, too. So, I guess I'd play as long as I could afford to play, because it would probably be the best odds in the casino.

Your experience is similar to mine, except it's only about half of my Royals coming within 30 minutes or less from sitting down to the machine.
As to how much I'd spend to chase a Royal: The same amount I would spend even if the jackpot wasn't that high. Assuming my bankroll can handle it, I play as long as I feel alert (i.e., I'm not making too many mistakes) and am having fun. As soon as I start doing dumb things like not seeing low pairs, I know it's time to quit.

I played a 7 hour all-night session on a $1 KoB Joker Wild machine at the Peppermill
in Reno in May. It was a stand alone Progressive, and it was over $8200 when I first
noticed it. If you go to the vpFree_Reno yahoo group, my full trip report is message
#80.
Here's an extract:
···
**********************************************
Saturday, I found 2 @ .25 and 2 @ $1 coin upright Jokers Wild with progressive
Royals with a ~99% payback at reset: they paid 18-1 on the quads. (I can't find their
EV in the vpFree database, which has 20-1 FP and 17-1 at 98.something%). The prog
amount on one particular $1 machine was WAY up, at $8200 when I first noticed it. It
got a lot of play during the day, one local couple in particular played tag team on it
and even "capped" it a couple times. The Policy is anyone can close it for 2 hrs max. I
got my play during the wee hours, 12:30AM - 4:30AM Sunday morning and midnite
- 7AM Monday morning. I ended up putting in only my first $100 on the first session:
one SF ($250) and one wild Royal ($500) gave me the credits to not only endure the
first session, but 35 quads helped me profit $1000 for 4 hrs play. The 2nd session I
hit five SF's and one glorious FIVE-of-a-KIND, five 5'S for $1000 to give me the
money to last the the whole 7 hrs. My brother made up some handy strategy cards
based on the Tom Ski shorthand, WITH EV's, which was great for me to make slight
changes as a nod to the Big Royal progressive.
And ya know what? I HIT the damn thing! At about 7:15AM Monday. $8493: my
biggest Royal ever. What a rush after working it so many hours. Held one
stinkin' King of spades and the other four came in. I was just getting ready to
let my brother take over on it. He had pulled his all-nighter the night before and had
enjoyed about 8 hrs of sleep when I'd phoned his room about 6AM. I'll rattle on
some other time about the Zen-state I achieved after 11 hrs in two sessions on the
same machine.
*************************************
Some more observations: one attendant in particular helped me thru the night by
stopping by regularly, keeping me talking, watching my machine while I took
restroom breaks. ($20 tip before I hit, another $40 tip after). Right BEFORE I hit my
Royal, I was taking a long break with my brother and the attendant. I made the
comment that I DESERVED a Royal. I was kinda punchy at the time. I sent my brother
up to his room to get a camera as I wanted a photo of me and this machine that I'd
spent so much time on. While he was in the room, I hit the Royal and I phoned him to
hurry down. He got a dozen good photos of the hand , the hand pay, me, fanning the
wad with a victory cigar at 7AM, etc.
An older guy had just come around right after I hit, says he NEVER chases Royals
anymore, learned the hard way the perils. Didn't put any damper on my celebration,
but I sensed he'd "been there" and I might undertstand better what he meant if I ever
have a protracted down-streak.
About all I can put into words about the "symbiosis" with the machine, is that I NEVER
got emotionally UP or DOWN sweating about my hands or my credits level. I like to
say that I didn't waste many HOPE credits. I just genuinely, deep down, BELIEVED that
what will be will be, and I was just the middle-man button pusher. Anyhow, I rarely
had much thought about my holds.
Also, epilogue - I was just at the Peppermill in Reno for 4th of July weekend. That old
JW machine is gone. Replaced by a new, fast machine with the same paytable and
also a Progressive. I didn't play it enough to get a handle on the meter speed setting,
but it got up to $5600 while I was there.
Also, with all this talk about Progressives, perhaps a mention is in order: Stanford
Wong's old book "Professional Video Poker" was a trail-blazer back in the day of it's
1st publication (1988). It concentrates on strategy changes for all levels for 8-5 JoB
Progressive. Worth a read if you wanna get a "feel" for the intuitive process without a
compooter print-out doing it for you.

-Thanks to all who shared their thoughts on nailing the ultimate VP
hand.
I actually base my sitting time on the meter. If it's at $3000+,
I'll sit there until I fall off the chair or start making stupid
mistakes such as forgetting to adjust the 2 piece Royal holding
strategy. I have played LOTS of $3000+ meters, by the way. So many
play without full coin and get the Royal, that it's not that
difficult to find these wonderfully positive machines. If the Royal
meter is between $2500 and $2900, I'll play til I start squirming in
the chair/someone starts blowing smoke in my face/pounds their
machine as if they're possessed/is drunk & disorderly. Under $2500,
I won't play an 8/5job at all.
I enjoyed reading about your adventures in this regard. Thanks
again.
