I seem to be getting a lot more pop up messages than usual. Any
suggestions on how to suppress them? I installed Yahoo's so-called
pop-up blocker, but it didn't seem to make any difference.

You can use a few different programs to block pop-up ads with varying results. Pop-up blocker from panicware.com is a pretty good one and it's free. I've found that the best way is to change to the Mozilla web browser, which has pop-up blocking integrated if you enable it. The Mozilla browser is free at mozilla.org.
I have found the FREE google toolbar to be a very effective deterrent to popups. It simply blocks every single popup and then if you want the popups to show up on some sites, you just click on the button in the toolbar to allow them for __that website only__. Plus, the google toolbar gives one immediate access to google's search capability. It's an excellent tool and if you have IE and Windows and are willing to install it, it's an excellent choice. Additionally, installation is literally a snap. Make sure to set your privacy settings if you don't want Google to know where you've been visiting.
The system requirements are:
Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later
The pop-up blocker requires Internet Explorer 5.5 or later.

The free version of Popup Stopper, panicware.com or download.com, has
worked well for me for a year or two now on my Win2K laptop. Once a
week or so one will get through when the computer is very busy. It
beeps when one is suppressed; to override just <CTRL>-click it...

If they continue to pop-up without you clicking your
mouse, you probably have picked up some Spyware
programs. Go to your search engine and search for
"SpyBot - Search & Destroy". You can download a
scanner that will find the Spyware programs and you
can delete them. The software is free but yhe
originator appreciates a donation. It worked for all
my computers that got infected by my granddaughter's
surfing!!

This is good advice. This problem is really growing and it's ugly.
If you are a frequent Internet surfer, there's a good chance you
could have your browser hijacked and your computer stuffed with this
junk software, rendering nearly useless. This is much, much worse
than spam.
There are a lot of good sites and information dedicated to fighting
this problem, and I have checked out most of it, but I think this one
does a great job of teaching you what you need to know and providing
links to the best resources:

should check this out.

I certainly second this opinion. I decided to install Spyhunter and
Popup Stop (total cost $30) and it identified 7 "severe danger"
Registry parasites and 72 "severe and medium danger" cookies, which
Spyhunter then deleted. According to Spyhunter these parasites and
cookies can monitor everything I do at my PC! My son said a few
popups were occuring this morning, so he installed Message-Stop
(MessageStop.Net for$10) and there have been no more pop-ups since.
So ... I have three pop-op stoppers installed (Yahoo's, Message-Stop,
and Enigma's Popup-Stop). Enigma's Spyhunter will let me
periodically rid my system of parasites and cookies.
Although none of this has anything to do with VP, I imagine that
some others on this board have computers similarily "infected".
Thanks so much for the feedback and assistance.

Or you can do a format to clean it all out, which your puter needs once in a while anyway
