poker rakes and poker software

As mentioned, a 10% rake up to a certain maximum for Texas Hold 'Em is pretty common. At poker rooms on the Strip, the max is usually $3 - $4. At the local casinos, it will be less. Sam's Town used to have a $2.00 max rake but that was a while ago.

Note that if the poker room has a bad beat jackpot or high hand jackpot, that is funded from the game as well. For example, Mandalay Bay has bonuses for big hands but they rake an extra $0.50 or a $1 ( I forget which) out of each pot.

The good news is that as you move up in denomination, the rake doesn't go up. You'll pay 10% up to $3 ( or whatever the house max is) whether you play $3 - $6 hold 'em or $10 - $20 hold 'em. At some level about that, the games charge a per half hour fee instead of a rake.

Turbo Texas Hold 'Em is a pretty good tool for learning the game. There's plenty of good books as well. However, playing live poker after reading about it is a lot different than playing video poker after reading about it. There's no substitute for experience at the poker table.
