I haven't been to Las Vegas in umpteen years, Southwest airlines
are starting to fly from Pit to Las in May and I'm thinking about
trying it out. I still receive offers from Las Vegas Hilton for a
room for a couple of days, if I get an offer for May I may take them
up on it. Should I make the airline reservation first in case I don't
getthe room offer, that way I can cancel one or the other if I can't
get them both together? Can you get to Las Vegas Hilton without
renting a car, every time I rent a car at the airport the rental
agents are meaner than junk yard dogs and frothing at the mouth when
you tell them you don't want their stinking insurance? Las Vegas must
pay millions of dollars in advertisements to get people to visit Las
Vegas and the first person you meet (rental agent) ruins your
vacation right off the bat! Can you rent a car someplace other than
the airport?

First thing for you to do is to join the frequent renter's program
for ALL the rental car companies. With the exception of Hertz, they
are free. Hertz's rates are typically much higher than the others, so
no loss by not joining their problem.
When you join the FR program, you can establish a profile. In that
profile, you can choose whether or not you want the ripoff
insurance. My suggestion is to get a Diners Club card and use it so
you'll have PRIMARY rental car insurance...with no worries about any
potential claims affecting your personal insurance policy. FYI:
Diners Club will soon be partnering with MasterCard for much wider
acceptance worldwide.
ALWAYS make your reservations online. You'll always get a better
rate because you can enter various discount codes. In addition,
you'll get FF credits for your affinity program of choice.
When you arrive at the airport, simply hop on the shuttle for
whatever service you've made your reservation. Tell the driver
your "Fastlane" or "FastBreak" or whatever the name of the FR program
is. The driver will ask for your name and confirm that you're on the
list. Most typically drop you in an assigned area and you select a
car and simply drive to the guard shack. The guard verifies your
license and notes the paperwork. This process typically takes all of
5 minutes. NO lines to stand in....NO pressure from rental noids...

Better yet, if you're just going to be there a couple of days and
don't plan on straying from the Strip, avoid the rental car entirely.
There are several shuttle van agencies at the airport that will take
you to the Hilton -- I got a round-trip for $8.50 last March. Then you
can take the new Las Vegas Monorail all up and down the Strip. There's
a station right at the Hilton.

The answer to rental problems....Dollar and join Fastlane. If you
have auto insurance now, that will be your first coverage for rental.
Check with you auto insurance person. Credit card will be second, but
make sure you have that coverage too. A cab is also a good choice. 30
bucks round should cover it. No fuss no muss; out of airport in
minutes.
I have to fly Vegas from Pgh in April. Have always been able to get
good rates from U S Airways. This time I haven't been lucky enough to
find a good fare. Have to be on lookout and ready to move on
reservations fast. Last Nov., 5 of us paid $179 round and baby was
charged $130; direct nonstop. I wonder if Southwest will fly nonstop
to Vegas.
If you haven't been to Vegas in years, it's worth a trip to look see
even if you don't gamble. As far as LVH, call them. If you need an
extra day over offer they might give the "let us see how you play."
BS or give you a casino rate. Either way it shouldn't cost much
extra. Find out time line for offer then book flights. Also, if you
play AC or other places sometime AC partners can help you with
reservations in Vegas.

The solution is simple. Forget the rental car. It isn't needed. The #108 runs from the airport -0- level every 20" 530am-830pm to the Paradise Road side of the Hilton and every 30" from 830pm-130am. If you have too much baggage use the shuttle services ($4.75pp). You ahev the #108 to get you downtown from the Hilton and the monorail at the front door to get you to the strip. Two blocks away at Paradise and Convention Center Drive (SB stop on CC Drive) you cna get the #112 to the Boulevard Mall or Boulder Station. A 1 KM walk gets you to the Stardust, CC, Riviera, and the Frontier. There are also free shuttles from strip and downton casinos to other places in twon as well as many CAT bus routes including the 24' strip and other 24' routes to get you everywhere. No need to put up with the illegal bait and switch tactics of the car rental companies!
As a final thing to do, write the FTC and comlain about the illegal bait and sitch tactices that they try on you!

Beaware of cabs in Vegas. they rip you off $3.20 to get in, $1.20 airport charge, and unless you catch them at it illegally take the long way via the airport tunnel to the strip. When you are taken an added 5 miles or more at $1.80/mile you are getting ripped off and if you tip on this too even more so. Unless going to the far south strip (Mandalay Bay) the tunnelroute is ripping you off. Mnay also practice a driving technique of not gradually slowing down fro lights but stopping more quickly to get the maximum waiting time charge at lights (20 cent every 37 sec). I owudl avoide cabs at all costs until they are honest and clean up their act. There are shuttle services, free inter casino shuttles, the CAT system, the monorail (Sahara to MGM and in between via the LV Hilton), smaller free monorail (Excalibur to Mandalay Bay via Luxor), and some hotels ahve comp airport shuttles too. And if you are a rated player the host may get you a ride to/from the airport.

WJ, Maybe you missed my earlier response to your PIT plight.
Airfares are pretty good in PIT now. You have missed the lowest
prices of several weeks ago for April flights, but there are still
flights available for about $230 RT. Most likely, these will only
get higher the closer you get to April though you could still get
lucky.
I wonder if Southwest will fly nonstop
to Vegas.
Yes. They plan to have at least one flight option PIT/LAS RT
available each day. Most, however, will require one stop. SWA
begins PIT service in May with $89 one way fares for the PIT/LAS
route.

One more show stopper, I like non stop and daytime flight. With those

I can't wait till Southwest starts flying Pittsburgh. For years U S
Airways has smashed little upstart airlines by matching prices to
drive small guy out of business. That $178 Southwest is ok with me.
I see US Air is matching as of May 4. It may not be so easy for U S
Airways to drive Southwest out.
Haven't used my miles for a long while. Maybe I'll try that tomorrow.
