Nice Hit! The Progressive was almost double what it needed to be to
bring the game to an EV of 100%, and it brought the EV to about
104.5%. How many people were pounding those machines?

Indeed.

Most members wouldn't be playing a 9-6-4 DB machine except in the very
circumstance you experienced. If I encountered that situation I'm not
sure I would even be able to play properly without some study time.

I'm curious as to any extreme strategy changes you made, i.e. did you
hold a 2 card royal over a low pair, etc.

This brings up an issue I've been thinking about for a while. With
many people carrying PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) nowadays, it's
about time someone wrote a VP strategy program for these devices so
that when someone encounters a situation like that progressive he/she
would be ready to play it having the right strategy at hand. Many of
these devices have a spreadsheet function which can be programmed with
the right strategy for any paytable. What does the board think?
Anyone want to tackle this? Anyone already do this -- i.e., download
the strategy chart from one of the VP software programs such as
Dancer's or Scott's into their PDA?

This is some of the vp related items that I have in my pocket pc, a Dell
Axim.

1 Strategy charts for many games that I generated with Tomski's VPSM
program.
2 Pocket Winpoker (which by the way is excellent)
3 vpFREE database for the Las Vegas and Laughlin casinos
4 Paytables for most of the vp games with ER variations
5 vpFREE glossary
6 Actually most everything from vpFREE that fits in a Word or Excel format

Unfortunately we can't use the pocket pc while playing in the casino! :frowning:

Unfortunately we can't use the pocket pc while playing in the

casino! :frowning:

When I play video poker at Showboat (Atlantic City), I've always got
my Windows Mobile phone sitting on the machine (slant-top
machines). Sometimes my wallet too, with my arm resting on it,
because it gets a little uncomfortable sitting on it for long
periods (besides, it's just full of casino cards, not like there's
any money in it... that's all in the machine!). When I have a
strategy question I pull up my own strategy notes all the time. If
I don't have the strategy I've gotten online and downloaded it (or
tried to at least) from Google, or I'll call someone and have them
email it to my phone. In at least a half dozen trips I've never had
anyone question it, and it's right by the main walkway into the
casino where all the employees pass during their shift change.

I get yelled at if I try to take it out near any of the table games,
presumably because it's got a camera too, but never sitting at a
machine. I'd actually contemplated writing a program that would
allow me to put in my hand and what game I'm playing and give me the
best play as a result, but don't know how they'd feel about that
were they to notice it.

That line of thinking made me start wondering... at what point would
casinos consider it to be "cheating"? Technically you can't cheat
the video poker machine -- as long as the hands are random, you're
doing nothing wrong -- but in the casino's eyes, I can't see having
strategy cards on your phone being cheating. But what about a
program that used user input to give you the best play? Or to take
it a step further, what about a program that used the camera to read
in the cards, analyze them, and output the best play? Obviously
processing this on a mobile phone would take so long it wouldn't be
worth it... but would it be "legitimate" in their eyes?

Dennis, can you provide more detail on how you get the database information into your PC?

Do you have to cut and paste via tha clipboard, or is there a faster way?

  Thanks,

- vpFREE database for the Las Vegas and Laughlin casinos

I've done it several ways. The first time was a little bit of work.
That is creating a separate file for each of the casinos for LV and
Laughlin. But it is basically a cut and paste via the clipboard (save
as simple text). After the files were created, I can update just the
casinos that I'm interested in. My pocket pc has WIFI so now I can just
go to the vpFREE links page then to the casinos of interest, copy the
casino data which I'm interested in (I skip the comments section and
save the machine info). Then copy and paste over the old data in a WORD
file. All done just on the pocket pc.

The first time may be easier using a regular pc to create the files and
then copy all of the files through the USB port to the pocket pc. I
have a separate folder for Las Vegas and another one for Laughlin and
another folder for vpFREE data with individual files for the cross
directory, glossary, slot club bonus, paytables, etc.

The strategies I've made with TomSki's VPSM on the regular PC then
converted them to Excel files (I like the column formatting better than
Word). Then I transfer them through the USB port. I usually use the
advance strategy. But otherwise you could just copy the basic strategy
from the vpFREE site. Using Excel, I have a separate page for the
deuces games then another page for bonus type games, etc. For example
on the deuces page one column is for FPDW, another column for Sam's Town
Bonus deuces, etc. As you scroll across on the pocket pc, each strategy
just fills the screen width. Then you will need to scroll vertically to
see the entire table. You could create another file with strategies
generated for different progressive levels (maybe in increments of +500
coins for the RF). However, they still can't legally be used in the
casino! So I use the pocket pc as a repository for all of my vp
information.

I also have Dean Zamzow's Pocket Winpoker on it which is much improved
over the free version. A big recommendation!

If you have more questions, maybe email me privately and I will try to
go into more detail.

I've had good luck saving the database pages using File - Save As - and
indicating the file type as html. I've been able to open them on my PC
as well as my HP iPaq pda.
