I've never seen a machine that doesn't give the player the option

to

hold or discard any part of that hand. I assume you must hold all

five

cards and then press "DRAW" to then cause the lockup and all the
subsequent hoopla.

I have had 3 dealt royals on multi-play machines during the past year
and a half. On all three, the machine locked up and the hand-pay
candle began to flash. The first two of these (3 play and 5 play)
were apparently close to instantaneous. The third (100 play) filled
each RF slowly enough that I could watch the action. Not one gave me
an option to do anything other than wait to collect the money.

I have gotten only those three dealt multi-hand royals cited above.
All other dealt royals have been on single line machines. On each of
those occasions, as best I can recall, I had to first hold the cards
and then draw for the RF to register.

A more interesting question would be about the argument you might

get

if you had a sticky button and then failed to hold one of the royal
cards before hitting "DRAW". Any idea of the timeframe to get a
mechanic to open the machine, verify the error and actually get the
casino to cough up that $200K? Anyone have an experience with

button

issues that were or were not addressed fairly?

I'll bet that most of us have experienced sticky button missed
holds. There are other possible screw ups besides that. So, if I
were in charge, I'd set all my vp machines to lockup on dealt
royals. No problems that way.

This includes any hand which can't be improved (even by drawing five), such
as four aces with a kicker paying 4000.

That wasn't always true.

Years back, some machines would also a dealt king-high straight flush.
Understandably, this was fairly irritating when playing for a progressive
royal.

Way back in the day, in the coin-dropper era, there was no autohold at all.
One pro told a funny story of a team playing a progressive. Back then, some
machines had an additional STAND button which held all five cards.
Guy was dealt a royal, got nervous or confused, pressed DEAL and threw it
away.
Since they were a team trying to keep a low profile, little was said, except
for the storyteller who had one comment.

"That was a weak play."

Not that I can imagine anyone doing it, but what about machines with a double down option?

Still autoholds and draws, but then gives you the option of doubling.

And Bob Dancer has written about a time he had Shirley double on a
royal (twice, if I remember correctly.)
