Pick Um Poker, Why do people like it?

Just curious, why do people like this game? To me it is too slow.
As I said, just curious.

It is quite slow. I will play it on occasion because of its high EV and low volatility if I'm just looking for drinks and want to rack up some points, but I tend to want to move on quickly.

I'm guessing you haven't played PE on the new Ballys HD GMrs because
they're anything but slow.

One of the best things about PE is it's only a 1% drain in between
SF/RF's. 99%, plus bennies, is frequently enough to keep a player's
head above water in between jackpots.

My problem is that the RF is about 10 times less likely than most other games. Even though it's 99.95 EBV seems attractive, if you never hit a royal (or a SF) then, it's not so good...

Snooze em(PKM) is often the best paying game at certain casinos. Even
without the straight flush and royal it is still about 99% payback.
It is easier to play on "Pick-a-Pair" machines, because the playback
is MUCH faster than the old Game Makers. This game has a easy
strategy to learn, and can be played while drunk, dead tired, or both.

I have received 1 nickle and 2 quarter royals. I got 1 royal after
staying up all night and waiting for a room the next day at the
Freemont. I got my 2 quarter royals before I even saw a single
quarter straight flush. Some people here have received dollar royals
as well.

I agree it is EXCEEDINGLY easy to play. Something even a novice without knowledge of proper strategy can get right most of the time.

Fortunately I've got PKM and All American available at the same denoms. With AA's EV a little over 100% before cashback, I concentrate on it instead. I've played tens's of thousands of hands of PKM without a SF or a RF, but I do get them with AA. I think the factor is actually about 8:1 for PKM royals, but either way it's a boatload of hands. More than many casual players will play in their VP lives.

I have been known to switch back to PKM after the second or third beer though. AA strategy is a bear compared to most games...

I would advise against playing PE while impaired on one of the new
Bally's HD consoles. On my last session, while slightly groggy but
stone cold sober, I made at least five mistakes in three hours. Sure,
you can get in 1500HPH on the new version of the game but be aware
you're paying the toll for the higher speed limit.

Rob,

Do you play All American in Kansas City or is it available somewhere
else. AA has diappeared from almost every casino that used to have
it. AA should be placed on the endangered species vp list.

Ahh, a nice walk down memory lane courtesy of my friend Hockey. Pull up to one of the dollar pick 'em games at the sportsbook bar in the LVH, order up one of the ice cold beers they always have and begin my day. Several hours later and more beers than I could count I would stumble away for some much needed sustinence. Might have made a mistake or two, but it was a slow game - That was an experience I really miss!

On the topic of counting - to keep track of consumption I would get 20 one dollar bills first thing in the morning, tip a buck a beer - big spender, huh? - and when the pocket was empty it was usually time to move on. Unless of course it was not quite noon - then maybe have a couple more....(-;

My one dollar pick 'em royal came toward the end of one such session. Wanna meet a few hookers? Hit a $6000 royal in that place! Like flys to ....

This was only 3 years ago - but a lifetime in the VP world!

Cheers!

Kansas City, at the Isle of Capri. Or as it is affectionatly known here, the Pile of Debris.

Unfortnately they have recently screwed up their inventory in an effort to remove all the old coin dropper machines. At one point we had about 10 quarter machines with both full pay PKM and AA in a non-smoking section , two dollar machines with the same two games, several nickels, and probably 8 or so quarter machines in the smoking section. At one point there were some nickle machines there too.

Now they have gotten rid of all of the coin machines and gone to TITO. I assume they are trying to cut their labor costs given the tightening economy. What we have left is about 6 or so quarter machines in the smoking section and another six or so in the non-smoking section.

Comps and cash back are not great, but not terrible either for KC. They do have point mulitplier promos from time to time, and if you are over 55 (I think) they have a multiplier day every week. The problem is, what do you spend the comps on? The deli is not great, and the buffett only has a few things that are good (shrimp and crab on weekends aren't too bad). The signature restaurant is Farradays, which is pretty expensive for what you get.

But from a overall EV perspective, it is definitely the best regular play in KC. If what you enjoy is playing an advantage game and are not necessarily interested in the amenities or surroundings, then it's fine.

Your are right on, but there are not that many of them. They are pretty easy to get a handle on, and the tricky hands don't come up very often.
