Here's another article.

It makes an interesting statement that casinos can withhold winnings if players are counting cards in blackjack. I wasn't aware that was the case. Maybe that is true in England though, in which case Ivey picked a bad place for this play.

Forgive my ignorance:

If the cards were in the shoe, how could Ivey know which cards were next to be dealt ? Bets are made before the cards are dealt face down to the player .

They had requested to use a shuffling machine instead of letting the dealer shuffle so that card orientations would not change. Then they feigned superstition and got the dealer to turn 7s, 8s, and 9s 180 degrees so that they could track those cards because of the imperfect cut on the backing pattern. Then they would know if a 7, 8, or 9 would be the first card out of the shoe. If so, I would assume you then bet on whoever that first card goes to (I think the bank but I'm not sure since I don't play baccarat).
