Pesky Hosts?

My most detailed discussions about using hosts is in "More Frugal

A whole chapter on the subject.

I devote usually two words on the subject, no need for an entire
chapter: Benjamin Franklin. For many of you, Alexander Hamilton would
be equally effective. Essentially, people in service positions enjoy
being recognized. So, I try to facilitate the recognition wherever
possible. Other hosts are so patently coin-operated it's really easy
to deal with them. They get what they want, you get what you want.

I'm certain without even reading said chapter, it's probably a must
read for those who play below the +ACQ-5 level.

That reads as bribe, thinly disguised as gratitude -- and I expect
that, aside from that most obtuse host, that's how it's received.
Still, it sets you aside from average schmo who extends their palm
without any consideration at all.

I'm of a conviction that, with a host who has the discretion to get
you premium benefits, style and grace will take you further than cash.
And when it comes to showing gratitude in hindsight (vs. a palmed
c-note at the time of the request), I prefer a well selected gift
where feasible.
When a LV host took the time to email a photo of a bouquet I had sent
from a distinctive florist, I knew I'd scored a home run.

That's where I messed up!!! I had been banging away on dollar FPDW at
the Peppermill/Reno for three days. I had never really run mach action
at the Peppermill before. I wasn't staying in the hotel but every time
I went to get a meal comp the boothling would look at my action and
say "You must meet your casino host." I would say "I don't have time
today. I have to eat and run."

There was a drawing on Sunday and Al and I were amassing as many
tickets as we could. It was based on action.

So I was sitting there banging away. Al was standing behind me talking
to someone. Then I hear this:

"Al, I have to disqualify you from all drawings and special events."
Al's casino host had walked up.
"You're disqualifying me? What for?"
"C'mon, Al. You know you're a pro."
"What about the comp?", Al says.
"You haven't abused the comp, so I'll leave it alone for now. Now, I
have to find this Crimm guy and tell him too."
"Oh, that guy" Al said, "I know him, I'll tell him for you."
The host walked off.

We quit the play. I could just imagine meeting the host. "Nice to
meet you Mr. Crimm. You have some impressive action. By the way, you
are disqualified from all drawings and special events."

We should have tried the Benjamins.

I apologize for my lack of knowledge. What does "+ACQ-5" mean.
Thanks, Katy

I had originally given a couple of exceptions to this rule, and the
two were PMR and anything MGM Mirage, unless in the latter case you
play 25 dollar machines and up, but felt discretion was better part of
valor. Thanks for the assistance with editing lol.

For some reason, when I try to type in a dollar sign, it comes up some
sort of code. I meant "5 dollar level".

In my book nothing says "style and grace" more than a colorful 500
euro note rolled up into a straw. You let them keep the straw of course.

You figure they can score their own coke?

The straw's just a prop. I always offer a generous sample. That's what
"style and grace" is all about. First impressions do count! Sometimes
I offer them a ride in by DeLorean as a follow up. I make movies out
of San Fernando, always looking for new talent!

Anyone who's looking for more tips should read the "Quiet Lion":

How about a film of some people getting thrown out of
casinos? Any members of vpFree who want their
situation reenacted?

You'd never get permission from a casino or Vegas Metro, bad for
publicity and also they could get sued for civil rights abuse. It's
like the FBI waterboard tapes - oops, we erased the tapes, our bad,
were we not supposed to do that your Honor? Someone should do a hidden
camera though, and then post it to youtube. Maybe you could get Chris
Hansen at Dateline NBC interested? Or Michael Moore? Actually, cameras
are so cheap these days, and editing technology, there should be a lot
more small scale journalism going on, there certainly is no shortage
of scandalist activity. Good luck with that project.

C'mon, I've seen that Robert DeNiro routine on SNL. I'm sure you can
find it on YouTube if you search for it.
