Peppermill - been awhile since we've been - any idea ho...

Kevin was/is our host. We went back for the first time in years. Played
9/6 JOB comps accrued at about .1 base rate. After playing enough to get
to $41 in comps (seen on the video terminals scattered around the casino),
we asked to speak with Kevin to get a sense of where our play was heading in
terms of comp/status availability. It was his day off, and the host on
duty said that there were no longer ANY discretionary comps and all we could
get were the 41 comp dollars that the screens in the casino show were
earned. We ceased playing at the Pepp immediately as we felt there was
certainly no point in playing for .1 in comps. Perhaps it might have been
different if Kevin were there, but I frankly doubt it.

Nice tower room, though. Excellent job on the renovation - and Oceano was
great as usual.

I agree with the poster who recommended Kevin Brantner. He's been our host
for several years and he has always been great about accommodating us with
discretionary comps and elite levels (platinum) waiving the normal play
requirements, because we have a history of playing $20K/day combined (spouse
and I) even for a only couple of trips a year.
We play pretty much exclusively the 99+% VP, of which i hope they haven't
reduced. Without a host, I suspect you would never be recognized properly
for your actual play.

Again we know Kevin personally, and I would suggest that if you plan to
play at all seriously, contact him or one of the other hosts prior to your
visit, especially since you have played there before. Contact me privately if
you have any other quesitons, I have his phone number.

I actually did send an email to Kevin on Friday and did receive a response yesterday.

He is willing to comp a room but didn't mention anything of free play.

I did provide my membership number so he also had access to our play history. We've received up to $300 at some times and $125 in the most recent mail we received (last summer/fall). I would have thought there would at least be some type of free play available.

Considering we'd be spending $50 on gas and giving up $100 in free play at casinos right down the road I find it hard to make the trip. Maybe we'll still go but this definitely lessens the enthusiasm about wanting to do so.

We do love PEPP (at least what it used to be) but they apparently aren't catering to out of towners like they used to do.

I do appreciate all of your responses. I knew this board was the place to post for ideas and I thank you for all of the feedback.

This is just my opinion, but I think that is a generous offer of giving you free rooms with no history of play on your part for two years. Expecting free play also is unrealistic I believe.

I don't see how a visit to the Peppermill will require you to be "giving up" your $100 in free play at your Indian Casino down the road.? I think you should just stick with your local casino where you seem to have a very good relationship and forget Reno.

I also don't agree with you conclusion that the Peppermill is not interested in catering to out of towners. They have a lot of hotel rooms to fill.

Well, it sure has been an interesting discussion about the Peppermill and thanks for starting that up.

They have plenty of history on us and our trips and our coin-in/out. We gamble from the second we get there until we leave and we eat fast so we can gamble even more. The room is just a place to sleep for a few hours before we get up and go back to the casino.

A free room costs them nothing unless they are at 100% capacity so I don't really see that as something they are giving up. If they are at 100% capacity then that is different. However, they don't owe us anything so you are correct that a free room is something.

I wasn't expecting a lot (and thought I might get nothing) but I had hoped with our gaming history they would offer some type of free play to get us back into the casino even if it was minimal.

As to the Indian casino free play the local free play offers used to pale to what Peppermill would offer to get people to take the extra time and effort to make the trip. Now it seems to be reversed. That is what I meant about Peppermill not catering to out of towners like they used to do. Maybe I am wrong and others are getting really good free play offers and its just the length of time since we've been there. I can't say what others get now compared to what they used to receive so you are right I should not have made a general statement.

Chances are we would lose money anyway (and lose a good amount). So in that regard the amount of free play probably doesn't matter much but it was something to entice people thru the door to start gambling.

Don't get me wrong. I have enjoyed Peppermill in the past when I've visited. If I lived locally I would probably visit it often. Just not sure with all the other choices that exist today (that didn't a few years ago) and with much better local offers it is worth it.

If they haven't cleared out your account yet, you can use your Peppermill comps at Western Village in Sparks, which would be a good idea, since the food is better, the prices are better so your comp dollars go further, the service is much better and faster (no Peppermill attitude), and of course the gambling is much better, just look around. But be quick, Peppermill management will probably ruin this casino as well. Is Western Village better than Thunder Valley? Well, that depends what you're after, the games are better at Western Village, but the offers and promotions and comp rate and air are better at Thunder Valley and they have a lot more machines so if you're willing to look around you'll probably find a gem or two. It's only about a two hour drive between the two on Interstate 80, if Donner Pass is clear. Call 1=800=CALTRANS for road conditions.

I wasn't aware that Thunder Valley even had so much as 8/5 Bonus Poker?

Yeah they do in $1 and up. Reno has FPDW, 10-7 DB, plus NSUD and JOB in all denominations and multi-plays.
In other words-keep driving east.

On Frank Kneeland's radio show, Bob Dancer said that last year he played mostly at Dotty's:

Uh I think the article misses the main selling point of Dottys and the like. They are only allowed 15 machines so they space the machines quite far apart. It makes it nice, you never feel like you are crowding someone or vice versa. The homey atmosphere is kind of nice as well as the self serve snacks, but it's the spacing that is their reason for success. Although honestly I don't think they are taking customers away from the casinos so much as from the grocery stores and 7-11's.

They also have a card club and 99%+ machines and good mailers, that's what Dancer likes, because they have no hotel tower or other bloated overhead that they have to pay off. And that's why the big casinos are trying to shut them down.

There's one directly next to my usual casino...I actually walked into it last weekend...the machines are definitely spaced out, however I think there's more than 15..more like 50...I did notice NSUD from 5c to $5...and the fact they have snacks and stuff...
However I GO to casinos for the Hotel Towers and other stuff.
