People playing bartop VP at casinos

I've never done it as I figure I can concentrate better away from the noise. Plus the good machines usually aren't there.
I'm genuinely curious as to why people do it. is it-
1. The drinks are better/stronger.
2. The drinks are easier to get.

Some combination of the 2 or other things entirely.

Can someone tell me the proper etiquette. I'd hate to embarrass myself at my age!

For me the answer is "the games are better here". I mean, why should I play at a bartop where your always losing EV because of broken or stuck buttons, or the constant cigarette smoke being blown in your face or drunks commenting on your play, uncomfortable stools, or Bartenders constantly hustling for extra tips..you know with the old "hey lucky hit sir, Thats a good machine, somebody is hitting on that machine every week, you my friend are due - I wish you luck, etc ".
Despite this , here are some worthy bartops:
Case in point : Atlantis waterfall bar - $1 10/7 DB where royal is typically over $4500
                         El Dorado of old ( loose deuce, 10/7 DB from 25C to $2 )
                          South point - 8/6 bonus deluxe with $2000 progressive royal
                         4 queens bar - you have the check but their 99% base games are often positive due to fat jackpots.

PS - "the drinks are better here" does have some merit. You can gauge the color of the coffee, you can overlook the bartender and be 100% certain you are getting that top shelf liquor and not some taste alike knock-off. Excessive drinking and fool play go hand-in-hand so Casinos ( except Wynn ) encourage this behavior.

In reno not true, nsud, job, bp, bpdeluxe, super aces 10 7 db, 10 6 ddb tb+ can all be found somewhere

I find bartops quieter except for the fireside lounge at the pepp which is kool, less "wheel of fortune" noise.

1= yes especially if bartender appreciates tips & no i NEVER been hustled for tips by a bartender,

2=yea!

also, more comfortable than uprights,

Can someone tell me the proper etiquette. I'd hate to embarrass myself at my age!

put your money in ( $100 bill works best)& when the bartender ask what you want you tell them, most bartenders look at the buy in first,
and i never had request denied but i drink premium beer & JD only.

I play for Fun & Perks, so even though I know the paytables are sometimes not as good I like bartops for one reason: Service. If you play on the floor, you can wait 20mins before even seeing a cocktail server, then another 20mins before they come back with your drink (and sometimes they don't come back at all!).

Bartop etiquette;
- sit down at the bartop
- put money and Club Card in the machine
- make eye contact with the bartender and say 'Hello!'. They will usually come right over.
- Order your drink

Usually the bartendor will place a glass on their side of your machine and put the cash register receipts for the drinks you order in it. Use that same glass to put tips to them.

Most places split tips. Good for a bartender that is stuck with a no tipper, bad for a great bardender that really goes out of the way for their customers. I guess it works out in the long run, BUT, I have run across places that they don't split tips. I had held off getting my tip money out for the 1st bartendor and gave the 2nd bartendor $5 (assuming for both drinks). I later learned they did not split tips, so now I always ask at a bar that I am new to.

I don't care for srip casino bars as they are usually strick with the drink brands & have mins they need to see in the machine and even the bet amount. I find the bartendors there also not as nice. We like the South Point and M bars. Bars are great place to people watch and I find 'commardaree (sp?) at bartops also, people are nicer and usually in good spirits (surely do the drinks!)

All very true. I have found, however, pay tables are nearly always one
or two cuts below the machines on the floor. The Lady Luck had 9/6 JOB
at the bar but I can no longer recommend that place!

If a pen is in the glass they may want you to sign the receipt in the glass but not always done.
I put the tip in the glass as each drink is served.

(1) If not in Nevada, ask if they comp alcoholic drinks. I paid for a $10 drink in California high-limit room because I didn't know that they were only comping non-alcoholics.

Bartop etiquette;
- sit down at the bartop

(2) Ask what the limit is for comped drinks. At many places $15-20 is the max w/o checking your account or seeing at least $100-1,000 of action. Caesar's high-limit room has $35 max (with no play) - which covers Hennessey XO, but not Johnny Walker Blue. Some high-limit room areas have no minimum play requirement (and no need to show players card), but it varies.

- put money and Club Card in the machine

(3) Play 1 hand of something. I was charged $13 for a drink by an annoying bartender because I put my money in & hadn't played a hand yet. Some bartenders will ask you if you want a drink, and after you play a hand, they turn away & do something else.

(4) Put in $100 even if you want to play just $0.25. Some places have a minimum bill-in like $10 or $20 to serve free drinks, but they usually don't hassle a $100. If I want to grab a free drink for someone, I quickly sit at the bar, put in $100, play one hand of $1 VP/BJ. If I win, I tip $1 for the free drink & bring the drink to my friend. If I lose, I still tip $1/drink.

- make eye contact with the bartender and say 'Hello!'. They will usually come right over.
- Order your drink

I later learned they did not split tips, so now I always ask at a bar that I am new to.

(5) Thanks for the "split tip" advice.

(6) Possibly, you can ask if waiters/waitresses are charged per-drink if you want to be cheap & tip $0.25 or $0.50. But if waiters are charged $0.25/drink, $1/drink might be better.
