Penalty cards

I know what they are but does anyone have any suggestions on how to
handle them or can anyone suggest a book or website dealing with
penalty cards? Right now I don't know what to do with them or how much
a penalty card affects my play.

This really isn't going to answer your question, but it does remind me
of a funny story involving how NOT to handle penalty cards. A couple
of years ago I was playing an 8/5 Bonus Poker machine and got the hand
KTs + flush penalty. The correct play in that game is to hold just the
King if there if a flush penalty, which I did. The lady playing next
to me noticed this, and asked "Why didn't you go for the Royal?".
Without thinking, I just blurted out "Well, there was a flush penalty
card that time". As soon as this came out, I wanted to suck the words
back into my mouth, but it was too late. She followed with the
inevetible question "There was a what???". Rather than try to explain,
I just repeated that there was a flush penalty card. She had a look on
her face like I had just spoken Chinese, but it did have the desired
effect of getting her to drop the question.

I believe the only books dealing systemmatically with penalty cards
are the Dancer Daily Winner's Guide series. Other than Pick'Em Poker
(whose strategy may be presented without the use of penalty cards), each
of the other 100+ page volumes spend 10 or so pages discussing the
penalty card situations specific to that particular game. Although
straight penalties and flush penalties are the most common, in some
games you have high pair penalties, straight flush penalties, and more
complicated types of straight penalties (such as a "close in" straight
penalty or a "far away" straight penalty or a straight penalty that is
also a high card.) You also have some games where you find multiple
penalty-cards affecting the same hand (like when to hold an unsuited AK,
AQ, or AJ in Double Bonus).

Another source of information about penalty cards are my weekly
columns on www.casinogaming.com. The last 100+ columns are archived on
my website and perhaps 10% of them deal with some sort of penalty card
situation.

Hi dsegerconcho;
Unless you are a pro or semipro playing high limit games, the answer to these two questions are (IMO):

Q. What to do with them?
A. Ignore them.

Q. How much do they affect your play?
A. Most common games (JB, FPDW, NSU, DB, etc.) have the same return (within two decimal places) without penalty card considerations as they do with them. So the affect they have on your return is of little or no consequence.

The key is to use the correct penalty-free strategies. Some penalty-free strategies might not offer the optimum penalty-free return. I recommend the purchase of Jim Wolf's remarkable software, Frugal Video Poker for this purpose, as it will create the optimum penalty-free strategy for almost any game.

Thanks,
