Pay Out Percentage

Several months ago I seem to recall seeing a formula that enables
one to calculate the Payout Percentage of any given machine by
utilizing the pay table displayed. As I recall it was a very simple
formula and easily done. Unfortunately, I cannot not remember where
I saw it. Is anyone familiar with such a formula? Thanks....

I've never seen nor heard of such an animal, but I'd be EXTREMELY interested in learning about it if anyone can produce one. Frankly, I would be surprised if there ever could be such a "very simple" formula, considering that "perfect strategy", or data from it, would need to be used by the formula, and that isn't going to happen by just plugging a few paytable variables into a straight-forward formula. That's why computer programs like WinPoker take a little bit of computer time running an analysis each time you change something in the paytable; I presume that they are using an algorithym (no, not the way Al Gore dances) that considers every possible deal and draw combination. If anyone knows about such a "formula", please post info. Thanks.

   I don't know if are aware of it or not, but ther is a great site
on video poker just filled with pertinent info on the subject. It's
called "Video Poker Magazine." And one of the articles is called, "A
New Formular For Video Poker." This might be what you are looking for.

   Go to videopokermagazine.com and put "A New Formular For Video
poker" in their search bar.

Thanks anyway, Pappy, but I don't think that's what 'tjbosson' is looking for. The one you found is a formula for calculating necessary bankroll, whereas he wants to be able to enter a paytable to easily calculate the ER.

   There is a site out there that is a mathematician's heaven. It's
saliu.com and it features the very complex ramblings of one Ion Salui
who is a self-proclaimed mathematical genius. There are tons of
gambling information there and also something called: Ion
Saliu's "Fundamental Formular of Gambling: Theory of Probability,
Mathematics, Chance." Some of the stuff there just blows my mind!

I found the gambling article here an interesting read and a very
decent one for the layman.

However, the very weighty title of "Fundamental Formula of Gambling"
and the tone of the background treatise are far more worthy of
Einstein's Unified Field Theorem than what, in this case, is a matter
of some relatively straightforward algebra applied to basic vp
probability.

This guy's got a bit of an ego load to carry (but then again, who
doesn't :slight_smile:

correct. Other than that, the site is loaded with absurd claims.

I hope it "blew your mind" by the extent to which it is dead wrong.

you really want that formula, dontcha?
it's not rocket science, but it does help to have taken a course in
probability and statistics (a branch of science developed so
scientists could beat monte carlo)
first off, video poker is partially a game of skill, and the longer
you play the more it becomes a game of skill
this means you have to have a playing strategy, and i'm not talking
about eany, meany, miny, moe ..., or whether or not you think your
flushes are running, or any other of the many pseudo-science
strategies out there for sale
if you have a scientific strategy, there is a formula that will give
you the return for any paytable.
here's an example for optimum 9/6 jacks or better strategy:
rf .0025% x 800 = 2%
sf .011% x 50 = 0.55%
4k .236% x 25 = 5.9%
fh 1.15% x 9 = 10.35%
fl 1.10% x 6 = 6.6%
st 1.12% x 4 = 4.48%
3k 7.45% x 3 = 22.35%
2p 12.9% x 2 = 25.8%
j+ 21.5% x 1 = 21.5%

total payback = 99.5%

the first number next to a hand is the probability of that hand
occuring (using optimum 9/6 jacks strategy) and the second number is
the paytable win for that hand, so you can substitute whatever
different paytable numbers you have and you will get the total
payback for your paytable.

this will actually work well for most games that return 2 for 2 pair,
but for other games, the optimum strategy would be different.

if you want to go further, you should buy video poker strategy
master, because it will give you the strategy for most games for any
paytable you input (letting your computer do the dirty calculations
for you), or just take a look at the vpfree database, for several
games you will find the video poker strategy master output, also you
will find the paybacks for almost every game out there

or just chant "i don't believe in science" and use the eanie meanie
miny moe strategy or whatever suits your fancy

free clue: the science is correct, for other non-scientific
strategies your mileage may vary

You also need to substitute the probability for each hand, because those change as soon as you change the paytable values. Those changes are caused by shifts in strategy due to changes in hand values.

I have a question regarding booking free rooms at more than one place and
not using one of them.

We are coming to Vegas end of March. We are booked at MSS.
We just got an offer for 2 nights, $25, Free prime rib dinner and 2
Breakfast buffets at Terrible's.
If we check in at Terribles', get the comps and never use the room is there
a problem with this?

A problem for you? Probably not, although I'm sure you know if you
don't give them some decent action it will likely be the last such
offer you'll receive. But since Terrible's is not that big, it could
prevent someone else who actually wants to stay there from being able
to book a room, especially during a busy period in LV. I know it's
tempting to go after the cash and comps in the offer, but let me
suggest an alternative. Give MSS 4-5K per day action and they will
likely comp most if not all of your food as well as your room. IMHO
the food there is better and you will also earn some nominal cash
back along with the $$ for the scratch cards on all those quads
you'll be hitting to compensate for not getting the $25 at
Terrible's. You'll be saving yourself the time and hassle of checking
into and then out of Terrible's and running back and forth to use
their food comps as well. Whatever you decide, hope you have a great
time and let us know how things turn out.
