Palms reaction to my good luck

When I hit the 3 royals on same machine in a day the attendants were
pleasant, but surprised when I told them I'd hit on machine earlier in day. One guy
came by and saw 3rd royal and was shocked - he said the most he'd heard of
was 2 on same machine in same day.

By the way, a lister sent me private email that the best she'd done was 4
royals on 1 machine in same day and then they had locked up the machine.

When I hit both the 3 royals and the $20,000 (5 line) they asked if I wanted
my picture taken. I said no on 3 royals, but yes on $20,000 - and asked that
photo be on the "wall of infamy" only - not on giant outside screen. The
photographer was very nice and took a polaroid and promised to also send a
digital photo.

In all cases the attendants were happy for me - even saying "now do it
again" or "get back to back" - but not shocked, since jackpots do happen all the
time.

What a great run! You've lived my dream.

I had a different reaction during a winning VP trip to a casino I
won't name (it was one of the choo-choo themed properties). Two of
us hit four W-2 events in less than 12 hours. I was playing in one
of their invitational BJ tournaments and met a host between rounds.
After checking our player's cards, she was rather cool and
said, "Well, you've had a good run." After that trip, the tournament
invitations dried up and all I get from them now is the generic room
postcard with no free nights. I'd think they might want to try to
win some of it back.

I never heard from them again after that trip, and I guess this is
par for the course, if you are not a local. I can't for the life of
me understand that attitude. You would think that they would, in
most instances, have a better chance of re-couping their money, from
a non-local, who is, perhaps, less skilled at vp.

BTW, I play 700-800 hands/hour for a mimimum of 10 hours/day
(sometimes 12-15 hours/day) so I'm running plenty of quarters
through during my average 4 day stay. I usually rack up at least
40,000 points in an average visit.

That was the last time I stayed (or will stay)at the Palms. There
are other casinos in LV that show me through their polite attitude,
that they actually value my business. Therefore, I will favor them
with my business.

It also doesn't bother me a bit to be through with the Palms loud
music, teen-age boppers and 8 foot tall athletes (who think they own
the world!) Just my opinion of course. I will say, I did LOVE their
vp inventory. But still, I must play where I feel comfortable.

I had a somewhat simular situation last year about this time. I had
been playing quite a bit more then previous months and years and was
asking lots of questions about the slot club and comps and if I
qualified to have a host. The host went back and checked my play and
when they returned, they had a funny look on thier face and said 'you
know that you are ahead for the year!!!' like that was not
accecptable, I said 'is that OK?' and I guess they realized that they
were not doing the right thing and changed thier tone, but it was
pretty funny/sad that they had such a bad reaction to finding someone
that is ahead for the year without hitting some humongous slot win.

First of all, I am impressed with your stamina over a 4 day stay.
Your totals on WinPoker are also extremely impressive.

Of course you should play where you feel comfortable. However, I
wonder if some of these negative reports reflect the poor attitude
of a few employees or do they reflect casino policy? Sometimes
people/employees can be envious of another's good fortune etc. Was
the negative treatment from just one "host" or did others condone
or contribute to the negative treatment? Posting these incidents
is very helpful to visitors evaluating where to play and stay.

Hi Chris,

Nice to hear from you.

My experiences with The Palms comping policies were not all
negative.

The first time I stayed there (3 months after they opened) I phoned
from home, spoke to a host (Joey Antonelli) and was given a casino
rate "which could be worked off with enough play". I accepted the
offer w/o doubting that I would play enough for a room comp, since I
have always been able to score at least that, wherever I've played
in both LV & Reno.

The result of my play, (bankroll-wise) at trip's end, was less than
mediocre, down about two Bens.

The night before I was checking out, I paged my host and requested
that he review my play to see if the room could be comped. My
impression was that he seemed annoyed to bothered with this, but he
said he would check it out, and leave a message in the computer.
When I went to check out (fortunately allowing extra time) the desk
clerk told me that my play had not been reviewed by anyone, and she
couldn't take anything off the bill. I asked to speak to a slot
manager, and met with a very nice gentleman named Darrell Whaley (a
casino shift manager) who did give the OK to comp the 4 day stay. He
also apologized for the host's discourtesy,and asked me to "please
come back again".

I made my second reservation, 3 months later, with a different host,
Wai Mei, a very nice and friendly gal. She offered a 2 nite comp
and 2 nites at the casino rate, which could be worked off.

I did much better on my 2nd trip, adding nicely to my bankroll.

At check-out time I met with Wai Mei and she comped all 4 nights, by
using some earned points for one night. She was very pleasant, and
I was satisfied.

The 3rd time I stayed at the Palms, Wai Mei was on vacation.
Another host (whose name I neglected to write down) made me the
same offer as Wai Mei had the trip before. The results were the
same. 3 nights comped, one night points deducted.

You know the rest of the story. The host who refused me lunch, was
not the host who comped my room. He just happened to be the one at
the booth, when I asked for the lunch comp, shortly after the deuces
win. Perhaps he was not in a good mood that day. I KNOW that I
asked politely, because I always try to be extremely courteous to
casino personnel. I did not fuss about the turndown either. I just
said, O.K. and walked away.

BTW, when I receive a hand pay, I ALWAYS tip generously, so the cold
shoulder I received was not because I stiffed the employees who paid
me.

Anyway, as I said before, outside of their really great vp
inventory, there is not much I miss about The Palms. Particularly,
now, that the Gold Coast and the Rio are vp pits, there is no place,
w/i walking distance of The Palms, to play. When you stay there,
unless you have a car or take a cab, you're stuck there 24/7.

I received a private email advising me that The Palms now requires
$20,000 coin-in, per day, for a room comp, so I guess I was lucky,
after all, to be comped with my meager $10,000/day.

Of course, the above is just my very subjective opinion, FWIW.

Hi Chris:

I should have made it clear in my original post that the only
negative treatment I received was from the host who looked at my play
when I just happened to be way ahead. Timing is everything. I'd never
been in contact with a host at this particular "choo choo" place so I
thought I'd introduce myself and see if I could establish a closer
relationship with them. It's unfortunate, but it just didn't work
out, as things sometimes don't.

The slot crew members who issued the hand pays were all very friendly
during each of the four W-2 events and even made it a point to visit
with us in between jackpots while we were playing. The reason I
won't be more specific about the property is because I believe they
have overall great customer service. I miss playing there, but our
relationship has soured and fortunately, there are lots of other
places for me to play.

My advice FWIW: don't approach a host for the first time if you are
significantly ahead at a property, even if you've given them a fair
amount of play. They will like you a lot more if you're down.

   You should be more specific. We should know the name of the
casino and the host who mistreated you. That's one of the reasons
for a board like this. F them if they don't like the publicity !
Otherwise your report sounds like a Casino Player article !!
