Actually, we were at a Palms slot tournament last year that was done very
well.
Registration was in one of the conference/ballrooms.
The play was also NOT in the casino.
There were awards for the slot tourney itself plus for the players with the
highest coin-in over the same weekend period.
It was a lot of fun and seemed pretty organized - shame they didn't keep
that going.

Right, so don't play.
I don't see how a promotion like this helps the Palms. It isn't good
publicity, and doesn't make you want to come to future promotions like
this.
You are giving far too much credit to the general public. The masses seem
to love these things.
Harrahs excells at holding regular slot tournaments of this type -
several a month which are aimed at different play levels with different
prize amounts. At Harrahs, for example, they may invite 320 people
and give prizes to 150 of them. With a nice bit of food and a good
chance at a prize, people enjoy coming to these, and keep coming back.
I agree. This is one thing Harrah's does very well with. Too bad
for us that marketing and service are about all that Harrah's has
to offer.
They are well organized and have a lengthy timeslot for
registration (2-3-4 hours) so there is never a long line to register.
Further, the long line and crowd for the drawing blocked the access to
slot
machines, preventing some people from playing. Further some people stood
in
line 1/2 hour to 1 hour at the end of the day, and then were denied entry
when 7pm was reached and they had not yet reached the front of the line.
There is no excuse for this. The Palms should 'close' the promotion by
identifying the last person to be allowed to play. That should be done
at the official closing time. If they really want to be done by 7PM,
they should have an official closing time of 6 or 6:30
This led to arguments and ill fillings (I witnessed several people
complaining bitterly).
And this is exactly why this is such a terrible mistake. A promotion
that angers players is worse than doing nothing.
