Palms...How stupid can you get?

10a. Palms...How stupid can you get?
Date: Fri Feb 26, 2010 9:32 am ((PST))

I have a comp room reservation for the Palms on Sunday.
Just called to cancel because a friend is in town and I will be staying with her
at Wynn.
They tell me I will get charged $100 for not enough notice of 72 hours prior to
reservation.
I say nevermind, I will come check in, but do not need the room and ask if I
should just check in and then check out so that they can have the room
back....and she says.. No, if you do that, you will get charged $100 for an
early checkout!
So I say OK, I'll just check in. Good grief!

Glad you got your problem worked out -- here's another solution if you need to check in and don't plan to stay at the hotel. My "reason" is that, in the past (don't go to Vegas often enough anymore), I'd get offers, including freeplay, from more than one place (not in the same casino group; they'll know). I've never had any other reason to get out of a comp'ed reservation before.

I'd check into #1 where I was really staying, go to #2 and check in (I sometimes dragged a duffle bag with me, but if not, just say a friend is picking up your bag for you because it didn't arrive yet). I go to the room, mess up the bed, move the pilows and rumple them up a little, open the soap, wet some towels and throw them on the floor or in the tub, put out the do not disturb sign, and leave - I don't REALLY make a "mess", just try to leave some signs of use. Then I get (and play) my freeplay, get my duffle if necessary, leave. If the key is a credit-card type, I keep it with me in case I go back again, in which case I make a return visit to the room and renew my mess-up; if it's a more expensive (real) key, I just leave it in the room.

On the day you're scheduled for check-out, if you don't go back for some reason, call the front desk and tell them you've just left, but were running late for your flight and didn't have time to stop at the front desk to check out, and make sure they know you've left (if you don't do that part, they might think you're still in the room beyond your comped reservation, and charge you). If you didn't leave the credit card key, ask if they need you to mail it to them (that makes you sound stupid enough to remove any suspicion of what you did).

This has ALWAYS worked for me; only time I ever encountered a problem was when I forgot to call. Of course, using up a comp and freeplay without any additional play will eventually get you off their list for such comps -- and some casinos now make your comp conditional on your play on that particular stay, rather than really "giving" it to you based on prior play, so read the fine print.

Without free play being a factor, I think you were being quite reasonable and the casino was not, so I'm glad it worked out. At least one employee there was capable of rational thinking, apparently.

Why would you go through all this trouble? All you are doing is causing the maid more work that she shouldn't have to do. Believe it or not, there are people who have been known to come to Vegas and never use their room since they were gambling so much. So you're messing up the room so the maid has to clean it again, and obviously not leaving a tip. Do you think the hotel really cares whether you used the room or not?

The front desk can access the card reader in your room door. If you ever lose your key they can reset the code.

Therefore, it shouldn't be too difficult for them to tell from remote when the room was entered during a stay. If you only go in once at checkin and never re-enter subsequently, then you're either not playing or not using the room. They won't like either of those options.

Mess up the room but don't use it? My problem with posting this suggestion is that the casinos who monitor vpFREE can now make the necessary adjustments. It's always a judgment call about what to post and what to privately email. But when you go into that much detail on the internet for all to see you've effectively lowered your chances of you or anyone else ever being able to do this again.

I agree posting this idea in such detail was not good. Best way to end the issue with the maid only though is to always leave a tip.
Back in the day when you had more offers than time this did work.

At NYNY, we had a freeplay offer that mandated a hotel stay. So we checked, got our offer, played at NYNY but didn't sleep there so the room was untouched. Came back later the next day and the key didn't work. We went to the front desk and they said since your room looked unused for a day, we checked you out.

Wow. I sure hope that doesn't happen to me!!!

Often I leave all my stuff in my car trunk (since I'm only staying at each hotel 2-3 days), and I'm pretty immaculate about the room (e.g. I bring my own toiletries...)

Perhaps the comment about key-swipes is helpful (rather than messing up the sheets). Even if you don't sleep in the room, visit the room & swipe the key 2-3 times/day when you play at the casino.

P.S. NYNY may have some "nazis" running/monitoring their room offers.

I have a weird note on my MGM account, and NYNY marketing sends me room offers, but NYNY won't actually let me use them.

No problems at any other hotels in the MGM chain. So NYNY may have someone in marketing who's doing a lot of analysis on the people who use free room offers.

The autocheckout has nothing to do with casino marketing. It's just
something some hotels do if you have no stuff in the room.

Leaving a note on the bed usually works. You can also tell the front desk
you won't have luggage in the room and not to check you out early.

Nobody cares if you sleep in the room.

Same thing happened to us in Harrahs in Lake Tahoe.

I have done left a room empty at Paris, Suncoast and never had a problem. But since Palms probably will be sold off in the future, you will have to deal with new owners...Harrahs perhaps.

It is very insensitive of you to use nazis and NYNY in the same sentence.

What reason do you have for insulting the nazis?
