thought to myself I bet some on these forums probably have overheard
some gems they might want to share here. Am I right?
A few that come to mind right now...
1. Overheard a man giving his wife a real dressing down for holding a
low pair in Joker Poker K+. He kept shouting at her "It says KINGS OR
BETTER... KINGS OR BETTER!!!". Keeping with the same theme, a man once
commented to my wife "I notice you hold low pairs a lot. I thought you
have to have Jacks or Better to hold a pair". I wonder how many
thousands of dollars in EV he had given up over the years with that
little mistake?
2. At the blackjack table... "Don't play by the book. Everyone knows
the CASINOS write those books".
3. Also at the blackjack table, I heard this guy say for virtually
every single hand "The book says I have to hit", or "The book says I
have to stand". He apparently had a different book than everyone else,
because his book seemed to recommend hitting 14 and below, and standing
on 15 and above, regardless of the dealer's up card.
4. Overheard an obvious progression bettor at blackjack say "You can't
win anything by betting the same amount hand after hand!". Of course
in blackjack this is generally true, but not for the reason he thought.
5. "I don't ever use a player's card. The machine won't let you win
if you use a card". I'm sure everyone here has heard a variation of
this myth.
6. I once got "corrected" for playing a game that paid nowhere near
9/6 for full houses and flushes by a lady who said she "always looks
for the 9/6...That's how you can tell a good game". At the time I was
playing 99.9% APDW, and she was playing Double Double Bonus.
7. Not really something I overheard, but I received the funniest look
from someone playing next to me when I held a lone 6 playing Joker 2
Pair (i.e. least penalized mid card), and drew 6,6,Joker for an
unexpected quad. I could tell he was thinking "That must be the
luckiest idiot I've ever seen".
