BLM wants casino to cash out
Nevada (federal) - Henry Brean, Las Vegas Review-Journal - On a wish
list that includes ranches, creeks, canyons and basins, it sticks out
like a tourist. It's the Hacienda Hotel and Casino on U.S. Highway
93 near Boulder City, and it's on the Bureau of Land Management's
proposed list of environmentally sensitive lands that could be
purchased by the government later this year.
"It's just not a
compatible use for a national park," said Roxanne Dey, Park Service
spokeswoman. "Can you imagine a hotel and a casino in the middle of
Yellowstone?" The Park Service nominated the Hacienda for the BLM's
fifth round of land purchases under the Southern Nevada Public Land
Management Act of 1998. The hotel-casino is one of 33 parcels on the
BLM's proposed list, which includes nearly 37,900 acres valued at
approximately $94.4 million. Most of the land is in Northern Nevada.

Let's see. It was May 1996 when Mom and I stopped in the Gold
Strike. We were on a bus trip. A charter thing...Vegas League
bowling trip. Stayed at the LVC. This was the last chance casino on
the way out of town.
Somebody lit a match a few months later and the place was burned to
the ground. The Hacienda is the new (old) name to the joint on the
rebuilt property.
Wouldn't that been a good time to buy the joint? You know when it
was in ashes?
"Can you imagine a casino in the middle of Yellowstone?" What has
this lady been smoking? Does anyone think that the Hacienda sets in
a pristine area? Talk about a waste of BLM monies.
The Hacienda provides food and bathrooms for the tourist buses going
to the Dam. It is serving a far better use than BLM could ever come
up with. Give me a break.
