OT (?) -- Combating Smoke Smell

Hey all,

I meant to include this is my trip report, but I forgot about it when
I did the write up. My wife and I each have mild smoke allergies. It
is not bad enough to keep us from casinos, but it does decrease our
total enjoyment a bit.

While we are in the casino, we expect to smell the smoke. But when we
get back to our non-smoking room, we expect nice clean air.
Unfortunately, the smoke smell gets into your clothes and gradually
makes the room smell a bit as well. We have serious problems sleeping
in this smoke smell, so this has always been a downer for us.

BUT NOT ANYMORE!!!

Prior to this trip, my wife and I went to Target and bought some
Target-brand Febreze. We also bought a few small spray bottles and
filled them with the Febreze (so we did not have to bring the whole
large bottle). Each time we can back to the room to change or go to
sleep, we spent a minute or two spraying down the clothes. Not only
did this prevent the room from smelling, but the clothes had NO HINT
of smoke smell at the end of the trip.

This worked perfectly for us...it is definitely one of the reasons we
were able to rest more during this trip than in the past. I thought
some of the other non-smokers in the group might be interested as
well.

anyone that finds this advice valuable! :^)

Ken,

The Febreeze idea is intriguing and a great idea.

(Well, personally, I'm a little leery of Febreeze ... if I understand
correctly, it works by chemically bonding odors to fibers so that they
can't be released. Not a concept I'm comfortable with if ultimately
they don't come out in the wash, but that's probably my own neurticism
at work :wink:

What I want to particularly commend is your addressing this issue
without engaging in uncessary editorializing. I hope others follow
this example when the subject of casino smoke arises.

I'm pretty smoke tolerant, but my wife isn't and she has been doing this for
quite a while now. She even brings one of the little spray bottles down to
the poorly ventilated riverboat casinos and will shoot some Fabreze over the
machine and around her if the smoke gets bothersome. It always amuses me:-)

This stuff works great if you're forced into a smoking room. Just
spray down all fabric surfaces and you can now inhabit the room
without gagging.
Handy Febreze bottles can also be used to combat smoking in the
casino as they are just the right size to whack anybody on the head
who lights up :slight_smile:
Ideally, this is a problem you shouldn't have to deal with in the
first place, and you won't in the very near future, but in the
meantime, it's a good solution.

NB: I am nothing if not reasonable. When we divide the solar system
into smoking and non-smoking areas, I am willing to let smokers have
ALL EIGHT of the other planets, leaving relatively small Earth as
the only smoke-free planet.

Not only that - it works great to drown out that horrible perfume
smell from many women that seem to think they have to drown
themselves in it. Spray a little in the air if the room carries the
odor and suddenly all the air is good to breath again.

Harry,

Sorry I did not get back to this quicker. I appreciate the compliment
-- I feel strongly on the issue of smoking, but I don't think this is
the place to voice my views. So I tried my best to just provide a
suggestion without starting another war on the topic!

As for the fears of Febreeze...you really have no need to worry about
this product in my opinion. (I have a PhD in Chemical Engineering, so
I would like to think my opinion actually means something on this
issue!) Everything will come out in the wash. But even if it didn't,
for the vast majority of people there is nothing harmful in there
anyway! Amazingly, Febreeze is just water, corn starch, alcohol, and
perfume...
