1c. Re: One Coin versus Five Bob Dancer View
Date: Sun Dec 28, 2008 1:37 pm ((PST))
First of all, there IS "hope of a royal" when playing one coin - it just won't pay as much, certainly in absolute terms, and often in terms of the ratio to one's bet.
If there was NO hope of a royal, NO ONE could beat VP - because the games are ALL, as far as I know, negative EV, regardless of pay scale, if you can't get a royal.
So, here we go with the bad news - if the casino has an edge, the worst thing you can do is play all five coins - it doesn't matter whether or not you'll be hitting royals, you'll have negative EV, and the casino edge actually includes, in fact mostly consists of, what you "pay" to play waiting for your royal. The next-worst thing is to play one coin. The next-worst is to move down in denomination. In fact, the only way, short of getting lucky, to beat a casino edge at any game is not to play when the casino has that edge, and to look for times when it does not -- in other words, if there is in fact a real casino edge, you shouldn't play at all.
Now, of course, for many / most of us, not playing at all is not an acceptable form of entertainment, and therefore is not a "real" option -- and of course, for some, the purpose of playing has NO element of entertainment, and in that case, those players would NEVER play unless THEY had an edge over the casino.
But now, let's throw in taxes, and unless you qualify under the tax code as a professional gambler, even a small edge over the casino will leave you "behind" after taxes.
Especially if you're in one of those states with a gross income tax that doesn't let you subtract losses from wins, a sure way to share your gambling budget with the government.
I do recognize that not everyone complies with the tax laws and not everyone reports their wins and losses in accordance with the tax code, and I guess we all must give equal recognition that not everyone plays ONLY for money, but that many also play for entertainment.
Once you get to that bottom line, if you're an "entertainment" player, the question becomes how much do you NEED to bet to enjoy yourself even when your expectation is to lose - kind of an interesting question, but gamblers who play games where the player can NEVER get an edge on the casino answer this question for themselves all the time. Those of us who try to select games with a better chance of winning (or perhaps, of losing less), sometimes fail to realize that we are making a very simiilar decision much of the time.

I am saying if there was no hope of a?royal I would not play period.
...
Don't you consider the cost of that "rush", or is money no object for
you? What is the value of that "rush"? Are you saying it is priceless?
Worth whatever the cost? In my reckoning, a royal is worth the payoff,
minus tip, minus taxes, minus the accumulated cost of getting that
royal, but maybe you just chose to ignore these little issues? "Don't
Sweat the Small Stuff--and it's all small stuff"?

game has a casino edge it is better to bet one coin because you will
loose less over time.

coins otherwise it's not as much fun for me.

5a. 1040 tax question: summarizing W-2G's
Posted by: "aprvp78748" roaches@austin.rr.com aprvp78748
Date: Sun Dec 28, 2008 9:03 am ((PST))Tax preparation software (TurboTax, e.g.) requires (or, at least,

fairly large number of them from one casino. Keying in the pertinent
information from each of them will be tedious and time-consuming. Has
anyone summarized his or her W-2G's by creating only one per casino?
If yes, did you get any flack from the IRS? What date did you use?

I get a stack of 1099's about 3" high all from one casino- I enter them all
as one in turbo tax and just randomly pick the info from one of them- I've
done this for 3 years now and have never been questioned by the IRS (although
I
am aware it's not correct). I did get a notice when I forgot to enter 1 1099
that I received from another casino where they hand it to you with your cash
and I guess I lost it during the year. I feel that as long as you enter the
full total if they come back to you there wont' be any real issue, just some
additional paperwork. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has ever been
penalized by the IRS.**************One site keeps you connected to all your email: AOL Mail,

Tax only to find out that it wouldn't let me e-file because I had too
many w2gs. It said that if you had more than 30 (or maybe it was 30 or
more) w2gs, you had to mail in your return. So if your fairly large
number is over that limit, don't waste your time keying them in. Even
if you have less than that number you might want to consider filing by
mail just to avoid keying them all in. I think when you e-file it
sends the w2g info, but when you mail it in you don't need to send any
w2g breakdowns (although you would want to send copies of any w2gs that
had tax withheld).Messages in this topic (4)

7. Number 1 Rule of Craps - Count Your Chips When you Buy-In
Posted by: "Wild Bill" wcimo@yahoo.com wcimo
Date: Sun Dec 28, 2008 6:37 pm ((PST))I went to the Las Vegas Hilton yesterday to collect $10 in cash and use a
matchplay from ACG. I bought-in at the craps table for $1,000 but since I was
so into the game, I made bets right away and did not take the 30 seconds
necessary to count my chips. I played a little while betting mostly $10 and $15
don't pass and don't come bets. I did win the $10 matchplay betWhen I was
done, I went to the cashier, thinking that I was up $37. She counted out
$1,012. I looked at her count and thought that it couldn't be right. I then
noticed that she had taken $25 in red chips and stacked them by the $475 I had
in green. I told her that there must be some mistake because I never ended
wagered a green chip so therefore I should have still had $500 in green. She
said nothing she could do. I asked her to call a manager and have them pull the
tape from the table. After about 5 minutes waiting for a manager on the phone,
she hung up and said they would not
pull the tape of the table for $25, but they would give me the $25.Thanks again Hilton for stepping up and doing what was right.

9. Station Casinos: Signs of Impending Doom
Posted by: "peppermillionaire" peppermillionaire@gmail.com peppermillionaire
Date: Sun Dec 28, 2008 7:05 pm ((PST))Thought it might be fun -- in a gallows humor sense -- to compile a
list of the unusual things that are happening lately at Station
Casinos that bode ill for the future of the company.I'll start:
1.) The seemingly-permanent hiatus of the Jumbo Jackpot. Remember a
few weeks back when an "all new" Jumbo was announced and they
indicated it would get underway once all the local Station jumbos hit?
Well, the last one hit nearly a month ago and we're still waiting.2.) Bounceback cash mailers that all-of-a-sudden don't fit Station's
longstanding patterns. My December mailer had about half the cashback
I was expecting, given my level of play and historical patterns. I
know several others that have experienced similar cutbacks.3.) A whole lotta nothing on the "daily swipe" promo. I have swiped
12 times now and received 1,000 points EVERY SINGLE TIME! Is anybody
getting more?4.) Random Station restaurants that are suddenly charging for refills
for soda. A seemingly small matter, but when they've been offering
free refills for years and all of a sudden stop, with no posted
notice, it makes you wonder: was THIS what was keeping Stations from
being solvent? I'm looking at you, Turf Grill at Red Rock.I don't know about you all, but I've cleaned out my point balance on
my Stations card. They'll probably go Chapter 11 and continue
operations, but still... you never know...Messages in this topic (1)
