OLG shuts down Windsor Raceway, Fort Erie, and Hiawatha slot facilities

Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. is permanently shutting down slot machine operations at racetracks in three border cities, putting 560 jobs in peril.

The slots at Windsor Raceway, Fort Erie and Hiawatha in Sarnia have already been closed to the public, the Crown corporation announced Wednesday.

No little wonder. If they had kept the paybacks equivalent to
those available on the US side they might have had a fighting chance.

Because it is government run, only racetrack operators were privileged to
run casinos in Ontario. That hardly seems fair when maybe other more
competent businessman can invest and bring better returns.

We have a racetrack casino in Ottawa but it is far from downtown. Right
across the river, is the Quebec casino taking Ontario dollars. It makes
sense to invest in a downtown casino to bring back the players to our
jurisdiction. The racetrack owners make 12 million a year here running the
casino with no competition. The city only receives 4 million annually.

In Vegas casinos compete, and yes, some go bankrupt. It's a risky business
but government intervention messes things up like here in Ontario.
