Ohio Gambling Losses

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if I can deduct losses to offset my
W2-G winnings if I have to file taxes in the state of Ohio.

I'm thinking of moving there, but I need to know the tax consequences
before I make the move. I checked the Department of Revenue's website,
but I can't find any information on it.

Thanks in advance for any insight anyone can give me.

Hi,

Not to be rude but you are barking up the the wrong tree. you are
asking a bunch of gamblingholics a tax question. try calling any H&R
Block in the state. tell them you are moving there and are looking for
a tax professional to use once you get there. ask them some ordinary
tax question you know the answers to then slip in the important one
you really want to know. i am sure that answer will be more accurate.
unless you are a real gambler and hope there is an accountant from
Ohio in this group.

I had to check the chart giving information for all 50 states, in my own tax book, to answer this question. Don't start packing! Ohio is one of the unfriendly-to-gamblers states and you can not deduct losses to offset your winnings.

Regular Ohio folks can't deduct losses from state taxes. I have heard
there is an exception for the gambling professional. However, that
opens a big can of worms and is probably a really bad idea unless you
are, in fact, a professional gambler. You will have to file Fed
return as a gambling pro. Knew a guy who said he did this. It was a
big deal to get through, according to him. Of course, I never saw a
return of his. I can just mention what he said he did. As in all
cases it's your research that counts, not what you hear.
