(off topic) Knowledgeable Computer Dealer/Technician in LV?

I have a Win 98 machine, with quite a bit of hard-drive content which I
would like to retain. For various reasons, I would like to upgrade to
latest Win XP; and to purchase a new machine in the process.

As to the Win 98 content, I would like to copy all of current hard
drive to a separate drive on new machine. Intending, at absolute
minimum, to have read/write access to such content. And, ideally, to
be able to execute programs from separate drive.

My specific question, to VPFREE group, is for identity of a
dealer/technician who would be able to "address" my situation.

If preferred, reply privately to sphboc@aol.com or 702-290-7407

I had strong results in my recent migration to a new machine using PC
Relocator Ultra 6.0 (Eisenworld/AlohaBob).

Using the software and a supplied cable, transfer of
applications/files/data was seamless. Careful upfront planning is
advised to ensure the transferred directories are structured where you
want them.

If you aren't comfortable with working a little behind the scenes when
it comes to operating systems (in particular, accessing a file
directory and manipulating file locations), you might want to tag a
buddy who is for assistance.

My transfer was from a Win XP Pro system to Win XP Media Center but
the software supports transfer from Win 98 to XP.

I can recommend PC Club. I've done business with them for many years in both California and here in Las Vegas.

transferring data from one drive to a new one is a pretty simple
request for any computer tech, so any shop should be able to handle
it with ease...you can also network the two computers together and
transfer it yourself, but it would probably be easier to let them do
it...

You can purchase a large jump drive (1-2 GB on sale for $30-$50) and
just save all your hard drive data to the jump drive and then copy
it to your new computer. These are very easy to use -- you just
plug it into a port, and the computer recognizes it as another drive.

Email me if you have any questions.

If you're a do-it-yourselfer, I have some suggestions:

For simply accessing data on your old drive, an easy alternative is simply to take the hard drive out of your old computer and install it in your new computer as a secondary drive. Pretty easy, just plug in a set of power cables and a ribbon connector. You might have to set one of the "DIP" switches on the drive to make it a slave instead of a master. After that, you should be able to access all of the data content on your old drive.

Programs are another story. Usually you can run them directly on the old drive, but some programs will require a re-install because they add items to the Windows registry during installation. For example, a multimedia program that plays MP3s changes the registry to automatically launch itself if an MP3 is opened. You will not have this association on the new computer unless you either re-install the program in question or go into its settings to reapply the association (i.e. make it the default player for MP3 files). Anyway, the whole situation can become rather sticky, depending on the program. I suggest re-installing whatever software you wish to use on the old drive. You can re-install it into the same location on the old drive, which shouldn't actually change the program files themselves but allows the registry modifications to occur.

If all of this is too much for you, use one of the aforementioned experts.
