Your system may be slowed down by a TSR program. (terminate and stay
resident). Often, when you install updates or new software, you also
get a memory hogging TSR program loaded at startup.
Go to START>>> RUN>>> type in "msconfig".... go to the "START UP" tab
and you will be able to see all the programs that load onto your
computer at startup. You can disable any that you dont use by
unchecking the box. You might find programs like disk labeling and
automatic updating of little used programs (realAudio, quicktime) that
you can disable, free memory, and speed up your browsing. You might
also check your virus software to make sure it is not checking for
updates hourly or daily. Weekly checks for any program update is
sufficient.
If you are using FireFox, update to the newest version.... the older
versions had a memory hole... meaning it used more and more memory as
you browsed, slowing the machine. Also, check your browser plug-ins
or add-ons. Even though you are not using or displaying the Yahoo
Toolbar, it will use memory and processing power. Dont just delete it
from the browser window, remove it from the computer.
