NV real estate was "I Just Have to Say It "

A few years ago, I remember talking to a fellow who had moved to LV & been
there a year. Both he & wife had quit good jobs elsewhere to buy cheaper,
bigger house in LV & supplement income with gambling. The winning streak
that they'd been on before LV had stopped not long after their arrival. They
were now stuck & didn't have the resources to move back. This was before the
crash in housing prices.

Only a few people of the many that try it have what it takes to make the
transition. HAVE A PLAN that will actually work if luck turns or the
lifestyle turns out to be tiresome. Don't buy a house in NV just because it's
cheap & you don't see much downside risk compared with your area. Do you know
that NV has led the nation in foreclosures for 37 months? and Las Vegas is
always at the bottom when you google foreclosures? Maybe the market can't go
down much further but how would you feel about selling into a market
dominated by cheap foreclosures? You can sit on it & wait till the foreclosure
inventory runs out & in most other areas it might be a year or two but LV
could be 5 - 10 yrs. Money-under-the-mattress has a very good chance of
beating LV real estate during that time frame.

Jean Scott does not advocate quitting your day job! Many folks, however, still make enough in winnings and comps to SUPPLEMENT the income from their job or retirement, and even though the pickings are slim, the plays are still out there for that purpose. I'm SO tired of hearing about the "good ole days" on this message board and how this one or that one "ruined" it. You would think that the entire world financial recession was the fault of a couple of writers here in LV, were you to take to heart all that has been recently written on this forum! I would much rather see this become more of a positive forum where those of us who play for enjoyment, comps and a bit of vacation funds can play to our advantage, but not out of greed. I would like for us to talk about the game and the strategy and not about the people. Today will be tomorrow's "good ole days" so lets make the most of it!

I was puzzled on your response to Ted's posting as he did not refer to personalities. I think you may have been responding to a different member.

I found Ted's advice to be sage and pertinent to the times. He was talking about a family's real life experience with gambling. I have talked to several gamblers in the same boat.

A couple of "semi-pro" gamblers can put a lot of money through machines. At a negative 1% Disadvantage, 3 million dollars/year of action will cost them $30K. And it doesn't take much for an even greater loss.

So, let's keep in mind there are advantage gamblers that have had a disasterous last few years when they tried to "live their dreams." They moved to Vegas, Reno, Laughlin Bull Head City or Tahoe. They have saved enough for a reasonable base income from investments, pensions and/or social securtiy. They anticipated gambling would provide them a conservative Advantage play of $30K/year. They enjoy the complimentary rooms and food and other "free of charge" offers taht comes with the territory. Then BAM; luck changes, 102% advantage plays disappear, investments collapse.

"Enjoy the life" but make sure to remember "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch."
(Wiki "complimentary"at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complimentary). Be careful who is "doing the hustling." I hope today is not, as you wrote, "tomorrow's good ole days." Things are pretty bad for a lot of folks.

I can't believe anyone would count on making money to supplement their income from ....gambling. Seems like a contradiction in terms. Having fun doing it; hoping to make something;sounds more like it.

You must be new here.....

Most making the money probably never show up as posters, but they are there for the information - what little is shared anyway. People do make a few coins.... not me, but it certainly happens.

It was easy for a couple to make $30K/year up to about five years ago. Didn't need a big bankroll and only needed reasonable accuracy. You must be new to VP as times have changed.

Maybe you can't believe because I use the word gambling rather than playing. Gambling is a word rarely used on VP boards but it is what it is.
And don't forget the complementary "free of charge" rooms and food.

"Gambling is a word rarely used on VP boards but it is what it is."

Hi Dave,

That's an interesting point, your statement above. Do most here consider playing advantage vp as gambling, or playing? I definitely think your use of the word gambling does make a difference in how I would look at it....and I guess I look at the rooms and other comps as part of the fun, not as part of the "money" or income.

No, I wasn't playing seriously that long ago - when things were that much easier. Sounds like it was fun!
