NSUD played with FPDW strategy yields an expected return of 98.8% -
almost a full 1% loss in return from optimal NSUD strategy.
However, there are as you suggest a few basic strategy tweaks that can
restore most of the EV without taking too much time to learn them.
Since I play in AC where there are no viable deuces paytables
available, this is exactly the approach I take in playing NSUD on the
rare occasion I make it to LV.
There are two critical strategy changes to make:
- With no deuces, hold four flush over one pair.
- With no deuces, hold two pair when present, not just one.
Five other less critical changes that will go far to restore the EV of
your play are:
- With 2 deuces, hold 2 cards to a SF, whether consecutive or gapped
by one (lowest consecutive cards to hold being 4,5 and gapped being 5,7).
<In FPDW you only hold the consecutive cards.>
- With 1 deuce, hold 2 cards to a SF whether consecutive or gapped by
one (lowest consecutive cards to hold being 4,5 and gapped being 5,7).
<Again, in FPDW you don't hold the gapped cards.)
- With 1 deuce, hold 3 cd open straight cards (lowest held being 5,6,7).
- With no deuce, hold 3 cd open SF over a pair or 4 cd open straight.
- With no deuces, hold a 4 card inside straight (except A,3,4,5).
I believe these are the most important strategy changes (others may
point out more) and while I haven't determined the adjusted EV I
believe that play that incorporates these should yield a strong EV.
Now let me just qualify this by saying that I'm "winging" this just a
bit, so I encourage anyone who feels that they can improve upon this
reply to do so.
