First of all, this thread is very relevant to vp, given that it directly relates to the conditions under which we play most vp.
Secondly, a non-smoking "bank" of machines, while better than nothing, does not eliminate the dangers of second-hand smoke to players in such an area, given the fact that people may be smoking in close proximity (often times very close by). In addition, second-hand smoke can drift, and no ventilation system completely eliminates second-hand smoke from the air. And walking through a smoke-filled casino to get to such an area adds to the danger.
Non-smokers who spend any amount of time in most casinos in this country are endangering their health, and I think this is a factor every non-smoker should consider in deciding whether their hobby is worth continuing. (the move away from full-pay machines being another
).
Smokers often deny that second-hand smoke is dangerous, but the evidence tilts far more in favor of the dangers of second-hand smoke than its (supposedly) benign effects. I would believe a report issued by the Surgeon General of the United States over websites run by smokers, websites that are perhaps funded by the tobacco industry.
The trend here and overseas is to eliminate ALL indoor public smoking, including "private" places of business, such as restaurants and bars. That is a good trend, and I encourage any of us who care about the health of themselves and others to continue to fight to get casinos to go smoke-free. If they will not do it voluntarily, then we will have to continue to attack the problem through legislative and legal means.
Fiesta Rancho has a whole bank of non-smoking Optimum Play machines, right
across from the Amigo Club. You might want to inquire at Sunset, not sure
if non-smoking machine banks are a Stations-wide policy or just a pleasant
outlier at Rancho...
