Years ago a friend of mine ran backgammon tournaments on the East
coast.

When they instituted a no-smoking ban, business actually increased.
They saw players they hadn't seen for years, who had stopped playing
tournaments because they couldn't stand the smoke.

The same has happened with bridge tournaments. I was instrumental in
getting smoking banned from Toronto tournaments, over the pitiful cries of smokers
who said they would leave and never come play again. Well, the fact was that
the nonsmokers came back and the smokers learned to deal with it.
