Non-resident state tax question

I realize that you lucky Nevada residents don't have to deal with this, but since I just started
playing video poker last year, I am filing gambling winnings as part of my income for the first
time. (Another one of those last minute people!)

I live in Maine but do most of my gambling in CT at the Indian owned casinos. I know the
W2Gs are reported to the IRS, but would this information be reported to the state of CT as
well? No state tax is withheld in CT.

I have read Jean and Marissa's new edition of "Tax Help For Gamblers" and got the impression
that even though technically non-residents are supposed to file a return to the state where
they won the money that, in practice, very few people do. Is that because the information is
not provided to the state or does the state have access to the information but just doesn't
normally choose to go after the money?

Cathy B.

See "Connecticut" on the state chart on pages 107-108 of the tax book. It gives the answer to your question: "out-of-state residents are exempt from Connecticut taxes on gambling winning there, but in-state residents are not.)

Oh, thank God, finally some GOOD news. THANK YOU, Jean. I have been fretting about this all
night!

I looked up the Maine info in Chapter 9 of the book but I didn't realize that you would be so
thoughtful and thorough as to mention anything about non-residents under the Connecticut
information.

Thanks again for the good news!

Cathy
