Newbi full of questions

I am new ot the video poker gaming. I am a very good holdem player
and play blackjack and craps from time to time. I live in Louisiana
and got to vegas 1-2 times a year amd the Mississippi coast a few
times a year.

I was ready about video poker and strategy and said darn sound
interesting. so after further study on the internet and this group
I think i may like to play some. I ordered two of the better know
stategy books and bought a simulator with strategy. I am progessing
well.

Now my questions...

1. Being a holdem player our comps from the casinos suck so I was
thinking VP could help me eran more and give me something to do
without losing much when the Holdem games are not good. Is this a
correct assumtion??

2. What are my real expectations and limits to expect.

3. Bankroll needs?

4. Being that i usually stay on the strip MGM/ paris/ rio and such,
I understand the games there are not the best VP. Should i venture
out to better spots?

5. I'd like to focus my play at certain properies to earn max comps
and such. Harrah's in new orleans is close and the bixoli area too.
So suggestions on casinos on the stip to coordinate all my play???

Sorry for so many questions, but thanks for your time.

I leave for vegas again on 6-15

thanks

Welcome to VP! I'll try and answer your questions:

1. I'm not sure what losing "too much" means to you but a quarter
player could lose up to $1,000 in a day, playing all day, or a couple
of hundred in an hour. For a dollar player multiply by 4.

2. If you practice a lot, over the long term (years) you should be
able to get within .1% of expectation. Over the short term (days) you
could end up + or - 10% of expectation. The game is very volitile,
much more so than BJ.

3. On positive games a bankroll of 5 royals ($5,000 for quarters,
$25,000 for dollars) is a good starting point. More volitile games
require more. On negative games you will need more (infinite). There
are some very good programs available which give more detailed answers.

4. If you are serious about VP you will want to stick to machines with
a good payback. The definition of good varies for everyone. Some
will play 99%+ games, others only over 100%. The vast majority will
play anything as long as it's fun. A good starting point is 9/6 JOB
with good cashback and benefits. You will struggle to find this on
the strip. The locals casinos are a good bet. Check the database
listing on the site for a list of good games by casino.

5. Again, check the database for good games, but just a few
recommendations: MSS, Sahara, Venetian, GVR, Red Rock, Orleans, Palms,
Gold Coast, Excalibur, 4 Queens, Hilton. These all have a variety of
playable games.

Good Luck

That's unrealistic. Even for a loose game like FPDW +.25% cashback and
perfect play, you're looking at:
26/(.001x.01)/(.001x.01)= billions of hands and even then still about
a 16% chance of not making it.

More realistic is to look at N0:
http://members.cox.net/vpfree/Bank_NO.htm
On the above game, you can expect to be positive about 84% of the time
at 260,000 hands (N0) and 98% of the time at about a million hands (4N0).

N0=Variance/((ER-1)^2)

Check the database. I recommend the Horseshoe NSUD in Shreveport, and they may still have it in Tunica. VP at ALL HET properties in LV is, oh, never mind, don't get me started using bad language:-)

Not to rain on anyone's parade and just to opine about HS/BC...

There are no Bonus Points given. The 100-line and 50-line machines are only 6 in total
number and always filled, with people wandering about, waiting for them to open up. The
decent plays (NSUD and JOB) are only at the $1 level and above.

Yes, there are a few 5-line 9/6 JOB machines at the $0.25 level but are usually filed as
well.

Finally, the DL is nothing to write home about, very small and usually crowded.

Here's another way to look at this:

Using Dunbar's excellent Risk Analyzer for Video Poker:
http://www.shoplva.com/ProductDetail.cfm?ItemNumber=1463

Playing quarter FPDW. a bankroll of $5,000 with no cashback and a
$1/hr error rate gives you a 10% risk of ruin over the long term.
