New Year's in Vegas had over 220,000 people on the strip. Some time after
midnight the lights went out at the Palms, part of Rio, Flamingo, and Barbary
Coast for about an hour. Apparently a problem was caused by debris or
confetti or a balloon or something hitting wires. While the lights were off
confusion ensued. At the Palms there were no lights in the rooms, but the slot
machines stayed on and lights went on over BJ tables and people kept playing.
Some people were stuck in elevators at the Rio (and possibly elsewhere).
Fortunately we were at the LV Hilton with no problems.
The monorail is up and seems to be working flawlessly. Now that people are
paying there are no crowds and it is a pleasure to ride. Cars go by every 6
minutes or so. Best deal is buying the 10-ride ticket which several people
can use (and you can save for later trips). Trip from Bally's to Hilton was
very fast and efficient.
