I was at the Global Gaming Expo (G2E) yesterday and will be going back
today and tomorrow. There were quite a few new 6-coin bonus games
shown at the IGT booth, and I noticed many other vp games on the Expo
floor. The strategy gurus like the Wizard of Odds, Bob Dancer, and
the others who help us by developing strategies for these games will
have their work cut out for them for a while.
New Video Poker Games at G2E
My feeling is that those games are gimmicky crap and won't be played either by knowledgeable players or unknowledgeable ones.
First, it looks like operators will be able to activate Guaranteed Play on all Game Kings. It is unlikely they will. The psychology is still wrong -- you put in a lot of money and the meter is 0. Even though it no longer will go below 0 either you hit a big hand and throw away all your remaining hands or see the meter stay well below what you paid.
The new machines have gimmicks --
- multi-hand games where you pay 10 coins per hand to get a magic 5th card -- the card that will best fit the first 4 cards. Very cool if your first 4 cards fit together but mostly they won't be worth the extra 5 coins.
- multi-hand games where you pay 10 coins per hand to get a multiplier on the next hand. It's very confusing -- let's say you're playing a 5-play game. The multiplier might be on 2 of the 5 hands. You have to play very slowly to see which ones. Again, it is very unlikely that the return will be worth the 5 extra coins.
It is clear that IGT has completely run out of creativity -- their slot offerings are simply variations on existing themes. Maybe one of the other companies will start finding new, fun and unique poker games. Maybe not.
Bob, I know you're not posting but can you send the Administrator some information on what the PAR sheet returns for these rather boring games are?

The targeted appeal is novelty, of course. I think there can be a
demand for this on the floor. (No need to be concerned with ER north
of 97% for that player segment.)
But, I agree ... sounds like some of the game designs are too complex
for the SAST set ("short attention span theater").
It is my understanding that some 6-coin features, like Super Times Pay,
are pretty close to revenue neutral in the long run and/or affect ER
only minimally.
But the loss over the short run when the multiplier does not appear can
add up, as you are investing 20% more (6/5) for the same return. Once
again, the casino strategy is probably for you to run out of money
before reaching the long-term results.
In any analysis of the new 6-coin games that you mention I hope there
is at least minimal discussion of bankroll adjustments as well as
strategy.

10-coin. Not 6

A casino's long term expectation from a game is a function of the
game's ER and the skill of the players. An individual player's
financial staus, or running out of money, isn't relevant.
