The latest development in the Palm's "We Hate Locals" policy is not
a surprise to me. It's just that the Maloofs have marched to a
different drummer, while following the citywide strategy of "let's
make sure ABSOLUTELY NOBODY wins":
1. Open up the Palms with the same winning formula that made the
Fiesta such a success: great VP, decent slot club, good food. Use
the initial surge of interest to finance the marketing of the Palms
as the happenin', swingin', gotta-be-there, hey-even-YOU-might-get-
laid-tonight, hot spot for the moneyed trendy hipster crowd.
2. Observe with interest (while doing nothing for the moment), as
first Stations, then Coast embark on their "help stamp out video
poker" campaigns. Take careful note as Stations extends their
campaign to the point of buying entire hotels just so they can ruin
the VP there. Perceive with glee that after a slight and temporary
dropoff in business, the obliteration of playable VP has done no
actual harm to Stations OR Coast. Conclude that if every customer
had, in order to enter the casino, pay $100, be whacked on the head
with a 2x4, eat a live eel, and wear a big rubber red nose for the
entire time spent on the property, visitation would only drop by
0.00000000000000003%.
3. Cut off access to promotions, such as multiple points days,
mailers, etc. to those worthless scum who insist on playing the good
VP machines rather than "Lobstermania", or going over to the pit and
playing that wonderful new 6-5 blackjack game that was installed
because of customer demand. After all, just because we put the
machines on the floor, doesn't mean we wanted anybody to PLAY them--
unless that person was so dumb that they lost money just as fast on
VP as on a slot machine.
4. Pull out all the decent VP, back off the worst of the VP
offenders (those who are still managing to win/not lose), and turn
the Palms into the noisiest, tackiest casino on the planet, crawling
with dopeheads, hookers, and idiots with lots of money and the
intellect to blow it all in a single Saturday evening.
We are now in the final phases of Stage Four. There is no longer any
reason to go to the Palms, except as an exercise in self-
flagellation. I reiterate my recommendation to all VPFree members to
redirect their VP efforts to Reno, where there is excellent VP,
beautiful scenery, lower prices, and the weather this summer won't
kill you if you spend more then three minutes outside, unlike this
barely habitable hole in the ground called Las Vegas (and several
other things which I can't articulate on this site).
