We saw the Serendipity Show at the Gold Coast last night with a bunch of
other VP players. The show has replaced "Honkey Tonk Angels" and concentrates on
60's music. The show mainly had impersonators, this time being '60s favorites
like Davy Jones (The Monkees), Connie Francis, Little Richard, Petula Clark,
Stevie Wonder, and many others. Phyllis Diller was also included, but most
of the bits were song, not comedy, which was a good thing. One of the best
performers did Bette Midler, though I really thought her fame was in the 80s.
The band was excellent and the show was high energy. The impersonations were
not "dead ringers" but more or less got the spirit of those they impersonated if
not the exact vocal tones. I was surprised that Davy Jones didn't have any
British accent. The show was fun and lasted 1 1/2 hours. At the $19.95 price,
which I believe includes a complimentary drink during the show (plus you can
use your show ticket afterwards for a free drink at a bar), this is a good
deal. However, it is even better as a comp, and anyone getting the Gold Coast
mailer will probably get this as a freebie or a twofer (2 for 1).
Of our group of 10 I would say that 9 enjoyed the show, 1 thought it was a
waste of time. Those that liked the show ranged from quite enthusiastic to
mildly amused.
