Hello,

I just wanted to quickly post and introduce myself. I'm new to
playing vp in the Detroit area and am working on mastering Pick'Em
since it seems to be the best game around. I used to play JoB in
Atlantic City some, but since moving to Michigan I've mainly played
live poker (and most of that on the internet).

My interest in video poker was reignited after a recent trip to Las
Vegas. I hit my first Royal on a $1 machine, which was obviously a
highlight of the visit.

Sadly, it seems that I left my good luck in Vegas. Even though the
Pick'Em strategy is fairly simple, my first major session at Casino
Windsor was a disaster--a loss of 2000 coins in 3300 hands! Needless
to say I didn't hit quads, but I also fell far short on straights,
flushes, full houses, etc. Bob Dancer's strategy sheet warns that "in
a very unlucky day's play of 5,000 hands, you can expect to lose
2,500 or more coins." Knowing that and experiencing it, however, are
two very different things.

I like Casino Windsor because it is nice and smoke-free, but tunnel
costs and border delays may lead me to look elsewhere. One important
factor in my decision as to where to focus my play will be cash back
and comps. Can anyone tell me what kind of bounce back cash CW offers
in addition to instant cash back? I've read it might be around 0.1%,
but I'd welcome any information based on actual experience.

I look forward to learning more about vp offerings in the Detroit
area and meeting members of this group!

Danton,

I play or have played in all the big four Detroit area casinos,
(Greektown, MGM, Motor City, and Windsor) plus a dozen more or so
around the state and in Canada.

I still prefer Greektown for video poker, (Pick'em, 9/6JB, Deuces
Wild or NSUD, and a Bonus Deuces game that is playable if it gets
high enough) although the main Pick'Em area upstairs is a red-eyed,
lung-congested, smoke-filled room. MGM has Pick'Em on new HD
machines, Windsor has P'E at the dollar level only, (they used to
have it on quarters and fifty-cents too, but the execs got greedy)
and Motor City has nothing much to play except for a progressive DDB
game that sometimes can be profitable.

The cash backs and comps are about the same everywhere, give or take
a few percentage points. Greektown gives you a lot of free gifts,
although they are usually tacky, inexpensive ones, through calendar
coupons and mailed flyers. As far as I can tell, you don't get much
of anything from Motor City.

MGM has the best collection of restaurants, although Iridescence at
Motor City is still my favorite in town. And Motor City has the
best "rockin" bar in their new building.

We also have a connection at Greektown. An actual exec who meets with
us and responds to us occasionally on this site.. That would
be "Steve da slot guy." Look for his posts here, now and then.

Overall, compared to the all the rip-off Indian casinos around us,
Detroit is a nice place to party and gamble.

Danton,

Pick 'Em can be very tough in a 2-3 hour session. If you don't hit
quads, you lose a lot of money. Your session amounted to about a 12%
loss. These are very unpleasant but will happen. I suggest you
purchase Dunbar's excellent risk of ruin program. For your particular
session, you had a 1.1% chance of going broke. However, you had an
almost 10% chance of losing at least 1200 coins.

I think this the main reason a lot of people don't bother with the
math. It can be very depressing.

My last 9/6 JOB session, I managed to lose $500 on $2000 CI on a
$0.50 machine. I ran dunbar's program and my session will occur 3
times in 20,000 runs. As Tomski always says, I beat the odds.

Quick summary of the Detroit scene:

Motor City -- Don't bother

MGM -- some pick em. You get MGM points which you can use at any MGM
property. They have started a rather aggressive "If you win, we take
some of your comps away" program. CB is .167, BB maybe .1. Their
calendar is pretty good. Grab one in Jan next year. If they are
running a drawing, avoid it like the plague. Crowded, unorganized,
frustrating. If they are running a giveway, avoid it like the plague.
See above. Buffet is pretty good but expensive.

MGM Detroit wants to be Bellagio.

Greektown. PE, 9/6 JOB and 16/10 NSUD for a nice VP mix. 0.167 CB
and about .1 BB. BB is a mystery since they went to a machine based
theoretical system. Play wheel of fortune for the best bounceback.
Poker room is big but can be a little hostile and disorganized. It
has a smoking an non smoking section. Best selection of restaurants
to use your comps but use them when you earn them. They disappear
according to some secret formula.

Windsor. Prettiest of the bunch. Non smoking throughout. Some PE but
that is it. Poker room is lower rake, more friendly , better run and
they actually seem happy to see you.
