The (Comped) Blessings of Life

I've never been to Vegas, and I very much want to go. But it's what
I've read, heard, and been told about Vegas(and what I've seen on
various TV shows) that makes me want to go there, and - most
definitely - NOT(any of the contents of) the Vegas ads I see on TV!
I say this because of Jean's reference to the current "What happens
here stays here" LV ad campaign. I had considerable(as well as
considerably repetitive) exposure to at least 3 different ads in this
campaign while watching most of the Poker shows on ESPN yesterday,
none of which(the specific ads) were new to me.
While I find "the chauffeur(sp) ad" rather neutral, the other 2 ads I
remember from that campaign I consider anything but positive.
The "We got married, but I have to go to my convention now" and
the "Oriental postcard" ads are the 2 I'm speaking of here. By the
end of the day yesterday, having seen all 3 of them countless times,
I found myself saying - out loud - "If they think that ads like this
are gonna make me Want To Go to Vegas, they're sadly mistaken!".
Yes, I still want to go, but "no thanks to their ads".
It really makes me wonder who they're trying to appeal to; who(they
think) their "target audience" is. It's one thing to admit that
you're not the "family destination" you were once pretending to be,
but I think this is a bit on the other extreme?

At the end of this column, Jean mentions that the entire meal was
comped; for all of her party. This "brings up" something that I've
been wondering about for awhile now.
I often see references like this to people getting rooms and meals
and other stuff comped. BUT not just for them(or for them and their
spouse or a single guest), for a whole group of people they're with
("We often have friends meet us in Vegas, so it never hurts to have
extra room comps handy" and the like). And, while I'm not "new" to
the casino-comp/casino-slot-club system, I have to admit that I often
find myself wondering "How do they do it?". Let me explain:
My wife and I play at several AC casinos and have the slot club cards
for most of them. Eventually, we started using mostly my account at
a few of them, and mostly hers at some others.
One of the AC casinos where we mostly use her account is one that
sends us a considerable number of offers in the mail. Sure, we get
the "usual" room comp offers, but we also get a lot of "Bring this
card in on a specific date(s), and pick up a free____" type offers.
Well, as much as we BOTH use that account, if I were to go to AC by
myself that day - card in hand, I DON'T expect that my efforts to get
the freebie item would be successful. In spite of the fact that we
both use her account there - and in spite of the fact that the
casinos are aware of this practice(and not just by us), and don't at
all seem to mind or discourage it - I'm all-but certain they'd say
that the offer is for HER; not me, and/or us - HER.
This is the type of thing that sometimes has me wondering just
how "wise" it is for 2 people to play on 1 account at a particular
casino. It's probably something that's best evaluated on a case-by-
case(or casino-by-casino) basis(?).
But if I can't even pick up a T-shirt that's sent to her account -
which I DO play on, and/or if we can't both go there on the specified
day and get one EACH, it really makes me wonder how folks can get
rooms for their friends just by saying "They're with me", or get
meals for a whole group and/or family comped just cuz they all sit
together, especially since the friends-in-question do NOT play on
their account(as I DO with my wife's accounts). Oh, I realize
there's more to it than simply saying "They're with me"; I realize
that the person saying this Has *Earned* However Many Comps(rooms
and/or meals) are being requested/granted right then. But it still
makes me wonder exactly how one goes about such "multi-comps" or
group-comps, and/or wonder "What am I missing here?".
So, please, fill me in: What am I missing here(both about group comps
and/or about "the finer points of" sharing accounts with someone)?

Blackjack Autumn is one of the funniest books ever written on
gambling. I thoughly enjoyed it.
Jean,
Still reading your last book. Slow going because of all the
information. An excellent treatise on how to get the most out of the
casino experience.

Some Atlantic City casinos let you "bank" your comp's, notably the Borgata and the Park Place place's. My wife and I have saved up to treat her brother and his wife to a nice meal, and a couple of friend's and their kids' to a buffet.

The book seems to be getting in the stores VERY slowly. Book distribution procedures are very complex and the whole distribution system is very inefficient. Nothing a publisher can do really. So I am not sure how soon it will show up at Borders, B+N, etc.
