I loved this column!! Especially since I have concluded that drunks
have a fifteenth sense that enables them to make those rare draws
that, as Kirk would say to Spock, transcend logic; I have seen:

JOB/DB: Keep A5 of clubs, get straight flush
Dealt 66xxx, draw FOUR (keeping one of the sixes) and get quad Jacks
Dealt 56788, draw three, KEEPING the 5 AND 7 of CLUBS, and make a 7-
high straight
Dealt KKxxx, draw FIVE cards and get a ROYAL (talk about throwing up
on the machine; you see this sort of thing after you have been
pounding away for three hours and thanks to your deadly accurate
precision play you are down $600)

AND MY FAVORITE!!!!

Deuces wild: dealt A2xxx, draw four cards to the ACE, pitching the
deuce (didn't realize it was DW I guess) and snagging--you guessed
it--a royal. On a dollar machine yet.

So only drunks have that rare vision that allows them to, when the
moment is right, not only ignore conventional wisdom, but on
occasion, to ignore which game they're playing as well!

In honor of this discussion, I've decided to redefine the "Kelly
Criterion" as the blood alcohol level you need to attain to have the
mystical insight of a drunk, but without passing out.

hey john

i could mot agree with you more. i just returned from the gvr celebrating my bday and after consuming many cocktails i got 3 royals on a dueces machine in 1 hour. i think the alcohol brings the true vision for royals. it makes you see things that you wouldn't see when you are sober. don't live by that because it could put us in the betty ford clinic. anyway good luck to all this weekend.

>>>>>>GADS!! I'm doomed forever. More than one glass of free

wine causes me to fall asleep. I don't know how I've ever scored a
RF since I'm usually not even high while playing. Incidentally,
I've seen plenty of people (including local regulars) make the same
kind of incomprehensible, bonehead plays that Rock describes, while
they were COLD SOBER. They don't ALWAYS come up with prize,
however. I think that we tend to ignore all the times that such
idiocy doesn't work.
