There's stuff to play, you just have to find it. Typical SoCal setup, quite a few 100% machines, but with little cash back or bounceback. Easy room offers. Nice enough rooms, very good buffet.

But, in general, the closer to L.A., the poorer the marketing. You can grow old waiting for a decent mailing from San Manuel (adjacent to San Bernardino) or Morongo.
HOWEVER, without much effort Agua Caliente (not far from Fantasy Springs) and Spa Palm Springs sent me monthly mailings with coupons for $50 food (once a month) and $100 slot credits (good once a week). If you get up to Red Level the slot credits jump up to a whopping $500 once a month. And no stay even required.
Pechanga even sent a mailer with a free night, $50 food and $100 slot credits less than a week after I joined the slot club.
Many of these casinos have VIP lounges which are similar or better than how Diamond Lounges used to operate at Harrahs' properties. In fact I saw mounds of giant crab legs and a carving station in one of them just a few weeks ago.
So it's not hard to understand why many of us California locals aren't coming back to Vegas much any more. The 100% machines as mentioned by Paladin are obviously a good motivator to stay close to home. But, equally important, the service is as good or better.
Maybe I'm a bit slow, so it took awhile. But at least I finally realized how absurd it was to go to all the trouble of flying all the way to Vegas for a Caesars trip and then stand in line for potato chips.

I have been disappointed with the Harrah's lounges as well. Diamond club to wait in line for Potato Chips is exactly right.
