on File, Save As, give it a name, and presto--you have a newly defined game
you can access instantly whenever you like!

Brian, you're correct in this. But it introduces some complications.
I like to keep running stats on a number of practice games. When you
SAVE a game, you're also saving the stats for all the games at that
point. If you then conduct any play, those stats aren't reflected in
any saved file. This means that as you OPEN files to change
paytables, you then are working with a separate set of stats. Using
this method, there's no way to really keep a consistent running set of
stats going. Of course, you could keep stats for each game totally
segregated and LOAD the appropriate file before pracicing a game and
SAVE the results back to theat file when done, repeating this
procedure every time you switched to a new game. But at that point,
the whole thing becomes a real complicated procedure that goes beyond
what I really am interested in doing.
On the other hand, Frugal Video Poker allows you to save practice with
each game (or "machine" as refered to in FVP) as a continuing session.
The process is seemless. In fact, when you change from one paytable
to another it prompts you to save your practice as a session --
building on one you've already saved or as a new one.
I've been quick to criticize the menu design of FVP along with the
sequence of steps through which you access various features. However,
this is one area where FVP has it nailed just right.
Now, it's going to be a matter of "different strokes for different
folks" but FVP's got my vote on this count. If the graphics just
didn't seem so darn kludgy this program would be a definite fave of
mine. As it is, I still use winpoker for much of my practice simply
because I find the graphics MUCH more comfortable.
But, FVP's my choice when it comes to a lot of tasks. And as I've
remarked before, it's the perfect choice when I finally goad my wife
into mastering DB strategy. Getting winpoker to ignore modest errors
is indeed possible by setting the error threshold properly, but FVP
handles that situation with pure elegance.
