While in Vegas recently, I stayed and played at the Cal for 6 nights
of my stay. They have a bank of 10/7DB; half of the bank is 50c,
half is dollars. The bonus on this bank is that a RF in hearts is
worth an extra 1000 coins. While my results were horrid, I find the
possibility of getting this bonus adds to the fun and excitement.

One hand I was dealt gave me cause to pause AFTER the draw. I was
dealt KQJ9 of hearts (the 5th card being inconsequential). The
correct hold under normal circumstances is to go for the STFL, which
I did. On the draw, the AH popped up. It then occurred to me that
with the 1000 coin bous on a heart RF that dropping the 9H may have
been the better play.

Wanting to know the added EV of this bonus feature and adjustments
to strategy, I tried to plug this into both WinPoker and FVP...
without success. Can either of these programs handle this
scenario? If so, how?

Thanks in advance for helpful responses.

On Thursday (9/7) Correna had an inquiry about a unique play at the Cal. She
pondered what happens to the strategy when their was a 1000 coin bonus for a
heart royal. Her red flag hand was x,(K,Q,J,9) in hearts.

The group discussion took off examining the break-even point where holding
K,Q,J hold equates to K,Q,J,9. The consensus was 11,400 coins for the royal.

Correna really didn't ask about any other strategy changes for going from DB
10/7/5-4000 to DB 10/7/5-5000, but that should have been the more universal
inquiry.

Using 5000 for a royal value in Winpoker really changed the royal frequency.
A royal goes from once in 48,048 hands to every 37,479. Something fairly
major is going on. So given that you are considering heart high cards, there
should be several strategy adjustments to optimize ER.

In DB 10/7/5-4000, FL4 > RF3 except for QJT. Also, suited QTx > suited QT.

These are the first two lines I started messing with in the "Analyze Hand"
feature of WP.

For DB 10/7/5-5000, RF3 > FL4. Also suited QT > suited QTx.

Some Numbers:

Hand in DB 10/7/5 4000 coin royal 5000 coin royal
(coin value)

(A-Q-10-6), x

save RF3 6.5402 7.4653
save FL4 7.3404 7.3404

(Q-10-7),x,y

save FL3 2.3173 2.3173
save RF2 2.2982 2.3599

Anyone want to confirm my numbers and strategy changes? Maybe suggest the
next part of strategy to examine when there is a 1000 coin bonus?

I rarely play Double Bonus in any form. But I have examined the changes in
strategy for Jacks 9/6 with a 5000 coin royal, which used to be on the floor in
Laughlin. DB is a strange creature.

Thanks Terry, this was VERY helpful. And yes, DB is a "strange
creature," but that is part of the fun of the game for me... the
challenge.
