My Video Poker Personal Challenge Blog

I applogize if this violates any terms of service agreements I was not
aware of. Also applogies to those members of ACVPP who have already
seen this message.I just thought I would post the link to my video
poker challenge blog where I will attempt to earn a HET Platinum Total
Rewards card this year from playing quarter video poker.

http://vp-challenge.blogspot.com

I know, it is only a Platium card and a majority of the posters are
Diamond and Seven Stars. I am just real excited about this challenge as
I have never had a higher level players card before. Platinum is all I
can afford to do this year and this will be the first year I attempt to
play only video poker and not several different casino games.

Right now, I only have a few entries, but if anyone decides to check it
out - I hope you enjoy.

Hey, Pflyers.

I enjoyed reading your introductory blog entries.

Your initial annual budget is $886.36 and I think that is a fair
price to pay for the entertainment that you will have during the
year.

I have one question about your obtaining Platinum status.

According to your plan, and assuming that you only play
$3,333.33 each month, you will earn enough tier credits to
become Platinum during your December trip. Will your
Platinum level expire in March 2010? Or, will it extend
until March 2011?

If it is March 2010, you will only have the joy of Platinum
privileges for three (or four) months....unless you can earn
another 4,000 tier points before March 2010. Right?

I look forward to future blog posts. Please post messages
to vpFREE whenever you update your blog. Thanks!

Best of luck for your quest! (Let's trust the game holds.) A couple
of observations:

Your estimate of a $300 downside end result per session is pretty much
on target. Running a few numbers with Dunbar's VP Risk Analyzer ...

http://www.shoplva.com/ProductDetail.cfm?ItemNumber=1463 -- Excel req'd

shows you with a 3% probability of a session loss in excess of $300
(take $400 with you for a very strong likelihood of completing your
intended play).

It should be noted that "3%" represents the likelihood that your
"ending" session loss will exceed $300. It's to be expected that
you'll run above a $300 loss at some interim point in a session
upwards of 5% of the time.

You likewise calculate your average loss correctly -- about $200
aggregate for the year. (There's room to reduce it for cb/cash
bonuses, but to also increase it due to player error ... fair enough
to call those a wash at Harrah's.) Variance against that is obviously
to be expected.

Look for your annual loss to run in excess of $1600 roughly 5% of the
time; in excess of $1750 about 2% of the time. With decent luck you
ideally won't end up close to those numbers ... but you should have a
stomach to a suffer $1000+ interim loss between royals with a very
decent probability (maybe even $2000+ interim loss, but with only 0.5%
probability).

Curtis,

Thanks for checking it out.

I also agree that ~$900 is a decent price to pay for the
entertainment value. In the past, I would lose more then half of that
in one trip. I could have made the budget lower, but I decided that
more trips with shorter sessions would be better then less trips with
longer sessions. Plus it gives me a reason to get out of the house
more. It also gave me the opportunity to rein in my spending on
expenses such as meals and travel. In the past, I would spend $25-$30
on meals and $15 on tolls every trip. In this economy, every one is
pinching pennies, so I figure I should be doing the same. "Frugal
Gambling"

If I make Platinum this year, it will expire in March 2011. I believe
it would only expire in March 2010 if I did PIAD or DIAD. This year,
I can only afford to risk what it would take to earn Platinum. If the
economy starts to turn around, I might shoot for Diamond in 2010.

Right now, I am able to afford about $400 a month for gambling and
expenses, so that should work out well. The risk of ruin calculations
were one of the reason I decided on more trips with smaller sessions
over less trips with longer sessions. I know it will be rare if I
walk away from the first session with only a small loss of $15, I
just used that amount for the calculation.

What value do you see in being Platinum? 5X multiplier days? 500 free RC's each month? I'm sure it varies casino by casino. At Horshoe Southern IN, diamond members get free buffet (for 2) 7 days per week until 3:00 pm. My wife is diamond. I strived to make platinum myself last year and did it, but honestly I don't think altering your play just for platinum is worth it. Play for the entertainment.

From his blog:
"Some of you may be asking 'Why gamble more
just to earn a mid-level reward card where the only
benefits are line cutting and free parking?'.
With this challenge, I actually believe I will be gambling
less then in previous years. Last year, I played 10 hours
of $5 blackjack and craps every month at Showboat
and at the end of the year, I only earned 1,800 tier
credits and lost over $1,000. With video poker at
Harrah's, I know exactly how much I need to play to
earn a Platinum rewards card, and with the low
casino edge, I am giving less money to the casino
over the long-term."

Geez, Mickey ... some have asked the same about you!

Seriously, don't fault a relative novice for making an effort to steer
their way through play, rather than treating it as a game of "blind
man's bluff".

Why would anyone think this is a joke? And, why would they
post something so rude? What's the point of that?

I think his blog is very interesting and am glad he's doing it.

There are plenty of posts in this Group that are way less
interesting than this! But, most of us don't reply to them with
nasty remarks. We just ignore (and delete) them.

Hi, Harry. I'm a little overhung, or maybe I'm still drunk, this
morning, or is it afternoon, and my sense of humor is somewhat tweaked.
A good time was had by all last night.

But, seriously, taking a year to do it does not make 32,000 hands long
term. If I wanted the darn platinum card, and I only played quarters,
I'd do it in three days-and I'd save about $300 on gas and tolls.

Mickey,

At least the vpblog gentleman is executing a thought out plan before
playing in the casino. This puts him in the top 10% right there. He
has a clear goal and method for getting there. I would encourage
instead of insult. We can all offer our bits of knowledge.

Your point about long term being number of hands instead of number of
days is good but it probably got lost being he was still stinging
after the "is this a joke" comment.

This personal challenge blog also gives insight into how others
gamble. There might be some valuable information in there for the APs
out there.
