My biggest VP mistake

Years ago, when my bankroll partner and I were just
happily and obliviously hammering away at short pay VP
for fun, we encountered a machine that paid extra for
a royal flush, straight flush and flush in clubs. This
was fun! We sat down, quickly devised a "strategy" and
away we hammered. About 20 minutes into our play we
finally got our first extra-paying flush - or so we
thought, but the machine just paid out the regular
amount. Only then did we discover that the suit we had
thought to be clubs, was actually spades...

Now to defend myself a little I have to tell you that
English is not my first language, but it's still a
first class blunder!

Now what was your biggest VP mistake???

What is game variance and how is it calculated? Does each hand have a variance?

The difference between each possible result and the average result is
squared, then multiplied by its frequency. Those products are then
added and the sum is divided by the total frequency. Yes, the same
procedure can be done with any starting hand.

Is this the same thing as standard deviation?

The standard deviation is the square root of the variance.

As a general rule, once a play becomes worth more than, say, $40/hr at
dollars or $25/hr at quarters (and yes, I can think of a couple)
there's not a lot of value in sharing the play. There is always value
attached to information, and a great part of that is in the
fungibility of the play. Too many of the gaming public here assume too
much, or too little, depending, about how long a play will last. In
short, while sunlight may well be the best disinfectant, radioactivity
is invariably lethal.

Offering Exhibit A, let's see how long that 10-play "mistake" at
Caesars will last, and that's considering that from a purely
industrial perspective, it's just an ok play. Some people will have a
much higher opinion of it, though. If you toss in the room, well, that
changes the dynamics.

One pro is currently looking around LV for a $5 or $10 single line
play worth .6%. I wish him well.
