Multi-line volatility

Situation #1: Keep same denomination, add lines. Go from single line to
3-play to 5-play to 10-play, etc. This increases variance (actually, covariance)
as you add more lines. You will see bigger bankroll swings, and will need a
bigger bankroll for the same ROR.

Situation #2: Keep the same total BET, add lines. Like going from $10 single
line to $2 5-play to $1 10-play, etc. This REDUCES variance as you add more
lines, with a constant total bet. You will see smaller bankrolls swings, and
will need a smaller bankroll for the same ROR.

Lots of situations in between. Each case can be analyzed separately. Jazbo's
site is extremely helpful!

I agree with this 100% when you are talking about LONG-TERM bankroll. However, I wonder if #2 is true for a SESSION bankroll. Seems to me the short-term swings are greater on a $1 Ten Play than a $10 single line. Not??

To be honest, that's a rather bizarre impression, Jean.

For example, if you're playing 9/6 Jacks, the only time you're going
to win over $1200 on a hand with the Ten Play will be a dealt quad,
multiple SF, or a RF. ANY quad hit on the single line will do the
trick (i.e., big wins will happen more frequently on single line).

Likewise, it's infrequent that you lose your wager entirely on a
10-play bet ... single play is where you'll lose your entire bet more
often.

But, I know you know this, Jean ;). Question is, why aren't you
taking Frugal VP computer play mode for a spin and checking out the
comparative session volatility of single play vs. 10-play???

True, Harry. My brain is fried and my mind totally on another project I am working on and I asked the wrong question. I'm going to leave this discussion for now and return to it when I have time to think before I post.
