MS Trip (long)

I was playing at MS on September 23rd and saw that same "gentleman".
He was smoking those small cigars as well as making quite a racket
hitting the deal button. I believe he was on the 2nd or 3rd machine
from the right side (sitting with his back toward the main casino). I
was sitting 4 machines to his left. I slowed down my play since I
wasn't having much luck and watched him for a little entertainment
between hands. It seemed to me that the number of times he hit the
button might have been dependent upon what he was dealt because the
number of hits (or bangs) varied. Then he would occasionally write
something in his little folded piece of paper (it almost looked like
the paper they use in Baccarat). I started to wonder if maybe he
might have some inside info on some secret key sequence presses for
the game but quickly dismissed that idea. I will have to pay a little
more attention if I see him again - just in case ;-).

I ran into another amusing character at the racetrack in Lincoln, RI
almost 2 months ago. They have a couple banks of triple play VP
machines (not sure if they are VLT or what). I was playing nickel DDB
and the woman to my left was playing nickel deuces. Whenever she was
dealt a deuce or deuces, she would hold it/them and then bang the
button a couple times after saying "deuces" then gasp and hold her
breath. Once the draw was complete she would let out her breath with
a big sigh and complain about the draw. She did hit the 4 deuces one
time and ended up getting her total to $500 (I think she was playing
35 nickels per hand). She was very excited, telling me that she knew
she was going to hit them today. She said she doesn't usually come to
gamble but just had to come today because she knew she'd be lucky.
Well, she upped her bet and I watched her $500 go down to nothing.
She left and wished me luck saying that she was happy because she hit
the deuces and won $500! I didn't bother to comment that she really
didn't win anything because she never cahsed it out - oh well, let
her think that she's a winner.

Good luck and ROYALS to all!
Jack

I don't condone the behavier of the obnoxious cigar smoker that wanted his
machine. However, I think playing two machines draws attention to the best
plays at Mohegan. The converted poker room is new at MS and could disappear as
quickly as they set it up. Foxwoods has no playable $ machines and I think
playing two machines and allowing the abnoxious slob to cause a scene by not
giving up the second machine will only result in the removal of the machines and
hurt other VP players that are satisfied with one machine. Another option
without causing a scene would be to step up to the FP $5 machines. While you
may have thought you were in the right to stick to your two machines with
other machines available, I can forsee the day when CT is a VP wasteland and it
will be thanks to players like yourself.

Disagree that playing two machines will cause undue attention to any
particular game. It isn't hard to look around and find people
playing two (highly negative) slot machines at once. And Let It Ride
seems to be about as popular as Pick 'Em on those particular
Gamemakers. I play two machines at once because the deal speed is
set ridiculously slowly. While I play the $5 machines on occasion, I
don't have the bankroll to play it exclusively.

I doubt full-pay Pick 'Em will be around much longer at MS,
regardless of how much play the machines get (especially the $10
machines -- as far as I know, MS is the only casino in the country to
offer full-pay PE at that denomination). Might as well play them
while they're there. Doesn't make much sense to NOT play them in the
hope that the casino might not notice them, thus keeping them longer.

Truth is, if somebody walked up to me and said something like "excuse
me, I know this is silly, but I won a lot of money on this machine
the other day and really think that it is lucky for me -- if they're
all the same to you, would you mind letting me play this one?" I'd
give them the machine I was playing, even if the rest of the old
poker room was empty. Even though I'd know their reasons for wanting
the machine are silly, at least they would have been nice about it.
It was this gentleman's attitude (he was extremely rude) that caused
me to refuse on principle.

I might agree with you to a certain extent about PE being removed or
the paytables downgraded except for a couple of reasons. Mohegan Sun
doesn't comp. They have a generous slot card but you have to pay for
rooms and meals with it. Most of the stores mark-up their
merchandise by 25-50% over retail outlets in malls. This allows them
to give a generous kick back to Mohegan Sun when players use their
points in these outlets. Mistakes on Pick-Em are huge and I'll
venture that the casino is holding a lot more on them than the small
theoretical loss. Mohegan Sun is cash cow and competing with players
who can go to Atlantic City or Las Vegas. The money they might lose
on the $10 pick em is more than offset by the people playing $100
slots in the high limit room. Foxwoods did clean house and take
their pick em's out but they caused it by offering double points
which at the slot dollar level is insane. Will the MS pick em's be
there indefintely, probably not but it is hardly the bonanza that
it looks like on paper.
