Monorail-roaded

I am perplexed why a system that does so much good - gets people (and
drunk drivers) out of their cars and up and down The Strip - has been
self-destructive since Day One (we all remember those months of no
service).

Now the increase to $5, which will result in one empty monorail car
after another. Tourists will "stiff" the doorman to save that last
dollar for the slot machine. They certainly won't splurge for $5 when a
bus ride is $2 or a shared taxi not much more. That long walk to the
back of the hotel where the monorail runs had to be worth the effort.

It isn't any more.

It was a long walk wasn't it?

Yes, on your other point, I agree also. At $5 per ride ($10 per couple), the bus
or the cab does seem a bit more attractive that it did.

The bus system is no picnic. Especially in the summer. 6 local
buses leave each end per hour. Local basically means they make
stops between Sahara and the downtown bus terminal. 4 express buses
leave each end per hour that don't make those stops except the Strat
and maybe one more stop. That's ten buses per hour most of the
day. But you can still stand at a bus stop for up to an hour at the
extreme. They seem to bunch up because of the traffic and lights.
Downtown to Tropicana is 45 minutes to an hour and vice versa. The
stopper is all the lights between Flamingo and Fashion Show. If you
get on at either end you get a seat, in the middle you pretty much
have to stand up.

The cab fare with tip between Wynn and Bellagio is 8 bucks. That
beats the monorail for out of staters in a party of two or more. As
for the bus, is the money you save worth the aggravation?

Not to mention the colorful people you meet on the bus. I recall one
ride where a fellow covered in bandanges had a protracted conversation
with no one in particular about his medications. Everyone gave him a
wide berth. He did end-up with a seat all to himself, so perhaps
there was a method to his maddness. Net; I agree with many.
Vacations are too short for the bus. Walk, cab, tram. The monorail
just priced itself out of the tourist business. They'll still get
business travelers going to the convention center. I suspect this
pricing will be reexamined over time.

I took the bus for the first and last time this past summer. Went from the
strip to downtown. The AC was busted and, whenever we stopped, the driver
revved the engine. Don't know if it was to keep the bus from stalling or to
try and get some air in the bus. Took a cab back.

When buses are placed in park, such as while loading many passengers
at a strip bus stop, the bus will go into "fast idle." This mode
helps the bus to actually cool down and not overheat while stopped.
Doesn't seem to help in Las Vegas during the summer though...
