Mohegan doubling in size and opens Pocono Downs

"The Mohegan tribe is planning to roughly double the casino's 1,200
hotel rooms and add to its more than 6,000 slot machines and its table
games. Details of the expansion will be announced Thursday."

Also, they opened 1,100 slots/vp at Pocono Downs in PA.

Kept both under wraps until after the election. Did not want to
influence Rhode Island Voters on their Casino question?

Pocono Downs is old news.
But on the expansion, it was probably their strategy to see if any
competition was coming in before investing the money. Foxwoods
announced their's right after the 2 other CT tribes got denied. (What
annoyed me was the Govenor et al smiling and applauding their
expansion, after opposing the other 2 tribes trying to get recognized,
saying how they would be bad for CT.) I'ts bad strategy for RI or
anyone else that end up changing their mind later, because the larger
the Woods and the Sun get, the more impossible it will be to catch up
and compete with them.

Good point but then we know who the Pequots are paying under the table.

If I may gently disagree. Any first class casino, no matter what its
size in R.I. would hurt the Woods or the Sun, because it would be
closer to Mass. which is I believe their second biggest market behind
Conn. Gamblers want minimal travel to their casinos. BTW I'm presuming
that R.I. turned down the gambling proposal ? If they did then they're
very stupid as they will lose millions in tax revenue that is going to
go to Conn. Gamblers will gamble !

Yup, they shot it down 63% to 37%. The ads from anti-casino groups did
a good job making seem that the casino would corrupt kids, bankrupt the
state and all the money would go to Harrahs. The legislature also
threw the Narragansett's a porking by including a slippage clause
guarenteeing that the citizens of RI would pay Lincoln and Hi Li any
losses in revenue caused by the new casino. The deal wasn't that
great, but I don't see another casino being built anywhere else in RI,
so it was Harrahs or nothing, and the the idiots chose nothing. -Russ

Then why do people from this area still go all the way to Las Vegas? I
do believe a good RI casino would hurt the Sun and that's why they
waited until the proposition was defeated to announce expansion. But
the longer neighboring areas wait to open one, the more the CT casinos
will get close to offering what the major Vegas strip casinos have and
become a city upon its own, and have a distinct advantage over any
newer local casinos with fewer offerings. Foxwoods expansion is
supposed to concentrate more on entertainment, shopping, etc., than
additional gaming. The Sun recently had Cirque performers exhibiting
in the mall. And a new small casino is going to have a real hard time
drawing major acts like The Who or Aerosmith and the throngs of people
who follow them.
