In an unmoderated forum, folks can go overboard on ANY topic.
Both vpFREE and VPMAIL are classified by Yahoo Groups as
"unmoderated". But in reality, both are moderated, after the fact.
This means that the moderator doesn't routinely approve messages
before they are posted, but can moderate (or ban) individuals who
have violated group guidelines, and can request cessation of
disruptive threads. Both groups have experienced occasional
flaming/bashing incidents.
My goal for vpFREE is to achieve an optimal balance between free
speech, civility, and good manners. Several vpFREE members have been
moderated for cause, and I do a lot of moderating behind the scenes
that may not be readily apparent. I don't enjoy moderating duties,
try to do as little as possible, attempt to remain neutral during
controversial threads, and mainly concentrate on keeping threads from
becoming disruptive.
I have experience as a member of a few fully moderated groups, and
greatly prefer one that is moderated after the fact. Fully moderated
groups require additional logistics, introduce a delay, and often
result in uneven moderation that reflects the prejudices of the
assistant moderators. I've seen several instances where an assistant
moderator took advantage of his/her powers and engaged in flaming,
while stifling contrary views.
I don't ever intend to make vpFREE a fully moderated forum, where all
messages are read and approved prior to being posted.
