Mississippi W-2Gs

Marissa and I are working on a new version of our tax book, "Tax Help for the Frugal Gambler." It will be much expanded as we have a lot of new and more detailed information than we had in former versions. We are also adding a whole new chapter, giving specific tax help to poker players.

Anyway, I'd like a little help from someone who has a 2007 W-2G issued by a Mississippi casino. Are they still putting the tax withhold in Box 14 that says "State income tax withheld" even though it is not actually state income tax and you can't get it back or get credit for it no matter how you file.

Private or forum replies are okay.

TIA

Snip -

Marissa and I are working on a new version of our tax book, "Tax

Help for the Frugal Gambler."

Now, that's great news!

Do you have an estimate as to when it'll be out? Will it have
information regarding Louisiana?

The reason I ask is that, of the $90 withheld from my wife's $1500
RF at Pick 'Em, she recieved all but $15 back when the forms were
finally processed (We're from Texas and can file for the withheld
amount).

I don't know if the $15 was a flat fee or if was calculated at
16.66% of the $90. We're considering moving up to the $5 DB single-
line machine, but if we'd only get back 83% of the withheld amount
for quads & royals it would certainly make the game less attractive.

Can you (or anyone out there) enlighten me?

I'd also like to take the opportunity to express my thanks for all
you've done for us "Low Rollers". Your books have been major
contributors in helping my wife and me play VP profitably for the
past several years. Not to mention all the other freebies that have
come our way. I don't think we've paid for anything in a casino
since we read your first book!

We are at the Louisiana casinos 3 or 4 times a month. If there is
anything in the way of information that we can pick up for you, just
let me know.

Thanks again for all your efforts,

Thank you for those kind words, Noosarazoo. It is nice to know those endless hours of
writing have not been wasted and have been helpful to so many players.

I am working on the state section of the book right now and that includes
Louisiana. Right now I have this information about their state taxes:

All filers: Resident and non-resident. No deductions for losses even if you count them on federal return.

For a non-resident - So that means you will pay state tax on Gross Louisiana winnings. If your gross win is a small amount, you might be in a lower state
tax bracket than 6%. So after doing all the ratio calculations, you might get back
some of the withheld amount. There is no flat fee, but each person might end up paying a different percentage, depending on the figures they use from their federal return, the very few deductions they might have on the Louisiana form, and the amount of their total gross overall and Louisiana wins.

If you live in a state that has a state income tax, you sometimes can take a credit for taxes paid in another state so you won't be double-taxed. However, since you live in Texas, which has no state taxes, it looks like you are facing an up to 6% cut from all wins That means you might want to scurry back to quarters instead of going up to dollars - or better yet don't play in Louisiana at all. The only relief I see would be for a professional filer.

If anyone has information to add - or any information that proves any of the above is wrong - please feel free to comment.

You're information regarding Louisiana state income tax looks spot on
to me. The only comment I'll add is that from time to time there is
some discussion among the Louisiana state law makers to allow a very
few specific itemized deductions - such as for medical expenses - on
the LA state return, but gambling losses are NEVER mentioned during
these discussions.

Many thanks, Jean, for taking the time to answer my question.

I guess we'll stick with quarters for now. The five-play machine
(on multiple points days) gives us an ER of about $14 an hour. We
work cheap, don't we?

Unfortunately, Louisiana's casinos are the only ones we can get to
with any frequency.

Thanks again,
