Harrah's is our new favorite place to play VP in the Kansas City area.
Our Sept bounce back mailings included $250 in cash coupons, four
free buffets, a $50 food voucher for any restaurant, some double point
coupons, and other promotions. This is in addition to earned cash
back and comps from play. They have some decent machines, 9/6 JoB,
All American, and Pick'Em in both 25 cent and $1 denominations.
Today (Saturday) they had a promotion going where players drop a token
down a peg board box and they got whatever prize it landed on at the
bottom. Prizes included a hat, tote bag, $5 cash, $25 cash, and
"mystery cash". The mystery cash could be anywhere from $5 to $5000.
Although we hit the casino 3 or 4 times a week (must be those
obsessive VP players you keep reading about), we normally do not go
out on weekends. We leave the weekends to the working people and make
our trips in the middle of the week. However, due to the promotion we
made an exception for today.
We arrived a couple hours before the promotion started at 2:00 PM, had
a comped lunch in the deli, and settled in on a couple VP machines for
some serious play. How many times have you had 4 to a royal come up
and said to yourself, "Why in h--- can't that 5th one ever show up?"
Well today it did! Lucky Lucy held a single high card and the other 4
popped into place. What's the odds of that?
We played another hour or so then cashed out and headed for the
promotion to try our luck with dropping the token. When we saw the
waiting line we quickly changed our mind. The line of people waiting
for their shot at fortune and fame started in the hotel lobby,
stretched down a long hall past the conference center, past the
buffet, through the casino entrance, down the hall to the parking
garage, U turn and back up the hall from the parking garage, two or
three loops around the casino entrance, and finally to the promotions
booth. Unbelievable! The waiting time must have been 2 or 3 hours.
Can you imagine waiting in line for 3 hours to win a tote bag. Are
people stupid or what?
We ducked into the Range and used our $50 food voucher for a very nice
meal -- I had rib eye steak and LL had rack of lamb. Very well
prepared and tasty; this is one of the better steak houses in Kansas
City.
When we left around 5:30 the parking garage was full, the parking lots
were full, and cars were backed up down Harrah's drive (about a half
mile), back up the street, back up the exit ramp and onto the highway
itself. At that point we vowed to never come to a weekend promotion
at Harrah's again.
All in all, though, it was a pretty good day.
